With realignment talk bubbling back up, I’ve been thinking a lot about this. I hate the conglomeration of conferences that have been happening. USC and UCLA in the same conference as Rutgers???? Stupid. And it’s especially stupid for any sport other than football. As many have said previously, NCAA power football just needs to break off into its own league.
I looked at the WSJ’s list of most valuable football programs and there seemed to be a natural cutoff at about 72…I fudged one team and replaced UAB witch Cincy. But it doesn’t leave out any P5 teams or teams that have actually fielded competitive football teams recently. You break it out into eight divisions with 9 teams each. You can only play teams within this new league. 8 division games plus 3-4 non. 8 division winners to a playoff plus 4-8 wild cards, depending on if you want a 12 or 16 team playoff.
