Florida State nearing the end of its ideal window to explore a QB change

FSU nearing the end of its ideal window to explore a QB change
By: Curt Weller - The Osceola

When the 2024 schedule was released in January, it appeared perfect in quite a few ways for a Florida State football team that was going to enter the season with a bunch of new faces and plenty of talent but also plenty of questions.

It sure looked like the Seminoles had a five-game runway into their first real test of the season. None of FSU's first five games were viewed as slam-dunk victories, but it did hold a talent advantage on paper over each of its first five opponents before the real meat of the schedule began in October.

Entering the season, that felt ideal to give the Seminoles a bit of time to get acclimated, let new quarterback DJ Uiagalelei settle in and let a defense that was replacing key players at each level gel together before a back half of the schedule that was going to test if this team was good enough to make the first 12-team edition of the College Football Playoff.

Unfortunately for FSU, games aren't played on paper. Three games into the season, the Seminoles stunningly sit at 0-3, their ACC and CFP hopes dashed. The defense got off to a very slow start and the offense hasn't yet found its footing, managing just four touchdowns in the first three games of the season against Georgia Tech, Boston College and Memphis.

What was supposed to be viewed as a runway to 2024 contention for the Seminoles now appears to be a runway to the future.

Unfortunately for the Seminoles, that runway is running out shortly. Given what we have seen from FSU so far this season, that back half of the 2024 slate that looked like a test now looks like a serious challenge.

Given that, it sure feels like FSU is approaching the end of the ideal period to experiment with a change at the quarterback position.

It has been said and written plenty by us here that FSU's offensive problems go far beyond Uiagalelei. The offensive line has struggled and he's not been aided enough by his receivers' inability to catch passes at a high enough rate or create consistent separation.

However, a 56.6% completion percentage with one touchdown pass and two interceptions in his first three games just isn't going to cut it. While there are other problems beyond him, Uiagalelei has made some aspects worse with his struggles making plays under pressure, slow processing of his progression and off-target throws far too often and frequently in big moments.

It remains to be seen if a quarterback change — or at least a partial attempt at one — will be made this weekend when the Seminoles host Cal (3-0) Saturday at 7 p.m. (ESPN2). While fans have been clamoring for Brock Glenn to see if the redshirt freshman can bring a spark, Uiagalelei remains atop the depth chart, for whatever that's worth.

The case for a change to be made is pretty convincing. Considering Uiagalelei can't factor into your future plans beyond this season, which is already effectively lost in the grand scheme of things, it's worth seeing what you have in Glenn.

Glenn has been praised for his poise and passion and has shown progress in practice since he was thrown into the deep end last season in the ACC Championship Game and Orange Bowl after injuries to Jordan Travis and Tate Rodemaker.

Another convincing argument is that it sure appears the FSU offensive line is not as solid this season as it was believed to be. Far too often in the first few games, Uiagalelei has been under near-immediate pressure because of a missed blitz pickup or an instant pass-rush loss by one of his blockers.

If that's indeed what FSU has to work with the rest of the 2024 season, having a more mobile, athletic quarterback like Glenn, who has shown in practice both an ability to extend plays with his legs and also escape the pocket for chunk gains on the ground, feels like the better path forward for the Seminoles.

Glenn's threat with his legs may also change how defenses have to prepare for FSU's rushing game, perhaps giving a boost to the Seminoles' running back room which hasn't found much success early this season.

At least giving Glenn a series or two Saturday if Uiagalelei gets the nod and FSU again gets off to a slow start — it has one first-half touchdown so far on its very first drive of the season — feels like a necessity to try and turn the tide of this abysmal start to the 2024 season.

Beyond the overall case for exploring a QB change, though, there's an even more compelling case for why the change should be explored this week.

Remember that runway I mentioned? It's coming to an end soon. FSU already didn't take advantage of getting Glenn any reps in last week's 20-12 loss to Memphis, a talented Group of Five team but a G5 team nonetheless.

Say FSU doesn't play Glenn on Saturday, the offense struggles again and head coach Mike Norvell decides to make the change next week. Glenn's first start would be at SMU. While the Mustangs haven't looked great early in their debut ACC season and their stadium is on the smaller side with a capacity of 32,000, that could be a deceptively hostile atmosphere as SMU hosts its long-awaited first conference game as a power-conference team.

Say Uiagalelei starts that game as well, but Norvell makes the move to Glenn the following week? Even tougher. The Seminoles host Clemson in two weeks and two of their next four games after that are road trips to Miami and Notre Dame.

FSU didn't have a choice for setting up Glenn for success in 2023. He was forced into action against two top-15 teams as a true freshman and looked the part, completing 17 of 47 passes (36.1%) for 194 yards, two interceptions and no touchdown passes.

FSU has a chance to give Glenn a bit more of a fair shot at success this season as a redshirt freshman. Considering how important these games will be for evaluating his potential future as FSU's next starting quarterback in 2025, that feels optimal.

And yet, we're not too far off from having to throw Glenn once again into the deep end if the change happens at some point past the next week.

Could he swim this time with 12 months of additional experience under his belt? Of course. It's a bonus that Glenn also doesn't seem like the type where struggles affect his confidence much if at all.

But it doesn't feel like the current path is best setting him up for success. And considering FSU's uncertainty at quarterback going forward into 2025 and beyond, that seems like an inadvisable choice.

Think Neff and others need to make one crucial decision regarding the program.

we are in an age where programs are [can] hire an actual GM for the football program. I’m aware we have named Sorrells. Neff needs to decide if he wants the GM to make the football decisions regarding personnel and The best way to acquire personnel. Let Dabo make coaching decisions. Not sure what the right balance is there, but we need to find it. I’m sure a lot of programs will take the NFL approach on personnel decisions.

Las Vegas Shooting

There is some very fishy stuff related to what occurred. Looks like a cover up imo.

Newly unveiled Body Camera footage of the Vegas shooting proved that shots were being fired AFTER Paddock was already supposed to be dead.
The same fed that was in charge after the extremely suspicious Hawaii fires was also there at the Vegas shooting.
What really happened in Vegas that night?
Imagine what was happening behind the scenes. There is so much we do not know.
-Important security footage has never been released.
-No motive was ever found from Paddock.
-The man who allegedly took down Paddock, Jesus Campos, immediately went onto the Ellen show to give his story as a handler sat next to him. He then fled the country, never to be seen again.
-The list of questionable happenings during that fateful evening is too many to count.
When will the government start telling the people the truth?

****⚽ No. 4 Clemson vs. Wake Forest | 7:30 p.m. | Friday****

Welp, the United Soccer Coaches certainly value our talent over our results, so far. Listen, sports happen. Soccer happens - many strategies to keep superior teams within reach.

But a top 5 team doesn't have draws against Uof and Holy Cross. The good news is that at 3-1-2, we've only been beaten once. That's not to be dismissed by any means as winning can be hard. Our wins have come against the 79th (Penn State), 193rd (Loyola (Md.)) and 73rd (BC) ranked teams by RPI.

Our current RPI sits at 37 against the 47th ranked SOS. Uof (77th) and Holy Cross (143) are vastly inferior teams and we gave up two goals to each of them in draws.

Again, the caveat here of our national title winning team last year was slow out of the gates as well, sitting at 3-2-1 after 6 games. They finished 15-1-2 the rest of the season.

It's not panic time, but I'd like to see something. And what better time than against a Wake Forest program that began the season as a pre-season top 15 team, but has been even slower out of the gates (2-2-3). Quick sidenote, that one loss in the last 18 games last year? At Wake Forest.

Since 2015, Wake Forest (142) and Clemson (129) rank first and third nationally in total wins. Meanwhile, while off to the 2-2-3 start, the Demon Deacons lead the country in shots per game (20.6) , and total shots (144). Also top five in shots on goal (58), but have only scored on nine of those - and one was a PK.

Hopefully that inefficiency continues. Remarkably, we've been really good at not giving up shots - just 7.7 per game. However, opponents have scored on roughly one out of every seven SOG. For reference, Stanford (No. 1 in country and our lone defeat) is giving up one goal per nine shots on goal. I think we can improve here, especially given that the Tigers and Andema gave up just one goal on 15 SOG in the NCAA tournament last year.

Wake's Babacar Niang and Cooper Flax have combined for 50 (!!) shots this season, scoring six of their nine goals. Keeper Trace Alphin is giving up 1.43 goals a game and has just one shutout, which came against Radford, and gave up three goals against Gardner-Webb. Alphin was giving up just .9 goals per game last year.

I fully expect a battle on Friday - neither team is 'right', yet. Have to capitalize on our opportunities. So, let's chat about James Kelly - one of our most opportunistic players this season. The junior from Gastonia, NC has played in just 15 games with two starts over three years.
He has scored two goals this season on just nine shots, but amazingly five of his nine shots have been on goal - a .556 percentage, second-highest on the team behind Meinhard. Now, sure, most came against Loyola (Md.), but he scored on his lone shot against Holy Cross on Monday to put us up 2-1.
And, no pressure, Mr. Kelly, but the last two player highlights had a goal (Trimnal vs. HC) and an assist (Gerbet vs. BC).

Realtors: Need advice

Going to look at a house on some land, trying to understand how this new thing will unfold with the buyers agreement.

I don’t have a problem paying the fee, but I don’t know if it’s customary for buyers to ask the seller for a credit equal to it? It would just be irritating to pay the realtor directly, list our house and pay the listing agent, and then have the buyer of our home ask for us to pay the fee, so we’d be paying 3 fees….

Are you seeing buyers asking for this commonly? Just trying to get an idea of what is “industry standard” or kosher in the new rules.

Golf Cart Tailgaters

Tomorrow will be my 1st game back since the Tiger Walk/Lot 5 construction. Moving to New England has made it hard to get back so I’m excited to get there early.

I’ve been bringing my golf cart for years and always parked it on the grass behind the Westzone where the recruiting golf carts parked. Is that still an option? Or where are people parking them now?

I appreciate any intel y'all can give me.

Ga. coach Smart still doesn’t get it.

AS far OT as you can get...

Anyone here in the wine/spirits distributor biz? I'm looking for a small wine distributor for a fab Howell Mountain (Napa Valley) winemaker friend of mine to distribute his wine in SC and GA. We specifically want to find a small distributor. Anyone here in the biz or feel comfortable recommending a small distributor. It's a high end winery-not interested at this point in getting into grocery stores or big box stores.

Thank you in advance for any and all recommendations.

OT: Ticket/Apple Wallet Trouble

Is anyone having trouble pulling their tickets into their Apple wallet? I can see the tickets in the app but when I open the ticket, the “add to” Apple wallet option doesn’t appear.

I couldn’t make the App State game so I don’t know if this is an issue for me this season or just this game. I was able to transfer the App State tickets without issue.
