Checking in on the league members

Boston College- They don't suck out loud, but they aren't good either. One can hope they beat SMU for the second time in a year and do us a solid.
Cal- They would have fit right in the Coastal division
Duke-Manny Diaz is gonna trash talk the triangle hard core on the booster circuit. He just needs the Wake game to get a big extension.
FSU- It takes a special kind of screwing up to have a program go 13-0 and then start the next year 1-9. How does Norvell have a job and why isn't half their team in the portal already?
Ga Tech- Jekyll and Hyde program. 2 years in a row that made Mario pucker.
Louisville- We made their decade in the league with that loss.
Miami- They are not good but they are scary on offense. Being bailed out in two sure losses by officials and playing everyone to the wire takes its toll.
UNC-No matter how their season turns out, they GAVE UP 70 POINTS TO James Madison!
Nc State- Doeren's worst coaching job. Program is in freefall.
Pitt- The second half of their schedule is a real Narduzzi. They are likely to lose out, with the injuries and OL mess they have.
SMU- The leagues second smallest school is making a mockery of the league. The fact they face the weakest schedule didn't help.
Stanford- They have exceeded the no expectations I had for them.
Va Tech- I heard they were Clemson before Clemson was Clemson. Did Shane Beamer pay Brent Pry to say this? They stink.
Wake Forest- Gotta give Clawson credit, he has a job he can't get fired from.

Dumb take- the league is super competitive
Real take- The addition of Cal, Stanford, and SMU has created an image of a better league than it is.

SEC fines Ole Miss $350K and LSU $250K for fan incidents

SEC fines Ole Miss $350K and LSU $250K for fan incidents

By: Adam Rittenberg - ESPN.com

The SEC has fined Ole Miss $350,000 and LSU $250,000 for incidents involving fans during Saturday's home games against Georgia and Alabama.

Ole Miss incurred a $250,000 fine for a second offense of the league's policy prohibiting fans from entering the field. The school received an additional $100,000 fine because Rebels fans entered the field with 16 seconds left in Saturday's win against Georgia. The field was eventually cleared before another storming, which resulted in fans carrying one of the goalposts out of Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. Ole Miss' first violation of the SEC's policy against field storming occurred following last year's win against LSU.

The $350,000 fine will go to Georgia, in accordance with SEC policy for violations in conference games. If Ole Miss incurs a third offense for field or court rushing, it would be subject to a $500,000 fine.

LSU's fine stems from fans throwing bottles and other debris on the field during Saturday night's game against Alabama. The SEC's sportsmanship, game management and alcohol availability policies require LSU to pay the fine and use all video resources to identify those who threw objects onto the field at the opposing team. Those identified will be prohibited from attending LSU athletic events for the 2024-25 academic year.

LSU also must review its game management and alcohol availability policies, and report to the league its plan for penalizing violators. If requirements are not met, the SEC could eventually suspend LSU's ability to sell alcohol at its athletic events.

The fine for LSU, which falls under the SEC's spectator sportsmanship policy, will go toward the league's postgraduate scholarship program.

"LSU never, under any circumstances, condones the throwing of debris onto the field of play at any of its venues," the school said in a statement. "This kind of unsportsmanlike conduct will not be tolerated, and we will take immediate steps to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future."

*** Projected BOX SCORE *** CLEMSON vs Louisville ***

Sorry, getting it out late this week - I know @Cris_Ard relies on this for the weekly forecast - I'll do better next week!

First, last week's results:
cu-va-results.jpg

We outperformed on offense, which was very nice to see. Our defense had some mixed results but essentially finished just below par, but really slacked in points allowed. I think at this point in the season, despite our first game stage fright, our offense is LEGIT. Cade has been unleashed, meaning he's been given the freedom to take shots downfield and he's looking like his old Texas self. If we want to make any push in the playoffs our defense is going to need to form a new identity that it currently is missing.

But let's make the playoffs first, right? Just keep winning - but even so we need to win with some FLARE the rest of the way to overcome our shoddy schedule. Add to that our schedule is going to finally start to get a bit tough-ish now - seeing us face some dogs with the ability to bite. Four of the next five teams can best us on a bad day... if we can SQUASH some of these quality opponents - like in the 'glory days' - it will go far to convince us we can not only make the playoffs, but make a run.

We must overachieve against the computer projection to make that first statement:

This game really could go sour on us if we make mistakes. Louisville has faced better opponents - but they have lost against all three top foes (Miami, SMU and Notre Dame) BUT they lost each game by just one score and were not blown out in the stats department. Clemson has also faced just one good team (and lost) - though our offensive identity has emerged since that loss.

I would predict a score of 42-30 tomorrow.... but we must protect the ball. High hopes that the projection is smashed though and we finish with a 52-13 type of game. Then maybe we actually go UP in the polls Monday.

Dabo quote

Q: A few weeks from now you have an earlier signing day. Has it changed the way you do things?

SWINNEY: "No, it hasn't. I think it's great because it cleans some things up and you can go ahead and get your class signed. We don't really have a lot of spots open on our roster. We like the group that we have. You may have some guys leave and you can see who's back. The only guys slated to leave on defense are Payton, RJ and Barrett. Offensively, it's Tate, Mafah and Briningstool. Aidan Swanson has to go. So we don't have a lot of spots. It cleans things up so you can address your future and then you can move forward. I'm glad that they left some time in the spring (portal). Roster-wise, we like our guys."

Q: What's a number you're chasing for this recruiting class?

SWINNEY: "It's fluid. We're over the spots that we have right now. We feel great about our roster and the guys who will be back with the development we have seen. We like the class that we're getting ready to put together. They're coming in here and will fill some spots as well."

Only 16 teams with fewer commits than us in all of FBS. We just really can't get out of our own way with roster management - it's brutal

ETN and Mafah Season Carry Comparison

Saw someone in the other thread wonder what ETN would look like if he got the same number of carries as Mafah, so I decided to see how often ETN got 20+ carries in a game:

Syracuse (2018) - 27
South Carolina (2018) - 28
Boston College (2020) - 20

And now Mafah:

Notre Dame (2023) - 36
UNC (2023) - 23
FSU (2024) - 25
Louisville (2024) - 30
Virginia Tech (2024) - 26

ETN finished his sophomore and junior seasons with 204 and 207 carries respectively, and Mafah is at 161 with at least four games left to play. He also got 43 carries over the first four games, so 118 of his carries have come in five games almost tripling his workload. All other RBs currently on the roster have combined for 70 carries, so Mafah through nine games is sitting with 69.69% (very nice) of the team's carries. During ETN's junior season when he got 207 carries, all other RBs on the roster combined for 208 carries, leaving ETN with 49.87% of the team's carries.

So Mafah is getting more snaps, more often, in a much shorter time span, while his backups are getting fewer snaps when compared to ETN, all while presumably nursing an injury. Caveat would be ETN got fewer snaps because we were blowing people out more often and ETN averaged about double the number of receptions as Mafah.

TL;DR: Mafah is one bad mofo

Where we would rank in the old BCS system

A little more favorable to Clemson using the old computer model (ranked 18th). Not worth anything, but thought it was interesting.
