Proud to Be An American — Enjoy Our Independence Day

Fellow Clemson fans, and Americans, happy Independence Day.

The vision, ideals, passion, pursuits, etc. that coalesced on 4 July 1776 capture the American spirit. America is a concept, the great “experiment,” and I’m glad to be a part of it.

On 2 July 1776, Richard Henry Lee motioned for a resolution for independence from Great Britain. The “fear of the unbridled power of a distant, central government — a government that could . . . act capriciously to deny American liberty — ” (Civic Classics, 2012) unified the colonists, whether they were fundamentally for or against revolution.

The opening two paragraphs of the Declaration of Independence say it all:

“When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.”

Eleven years later, in September 1787, our Constitution came into being.

The six objectives of our Constitution further codified the type of governance envisioned in the Declaration:

1. Form a more perfect Union;
2. Establish Justice;
3. Insure domestic Tranquility;
4. Provide for the common defense;
5. Promote the general Welfare; and
6. Secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity.

It was designed to evolve, always with these objectives as its guiding principles — and it has, at least up to this point. It is the most incredible concept of governance that we as humans could devise. It seeks to strike the perpetual and tenuous balance between public and private liberty, while maintaining a strong case for individual rights.

Of the people, by the people, for the people. Lincoln got it.

And these ideas aren’t guaranteed — human tendencies will want to tear these documents and ideas apart. Freedom is in constant peril.

They are worth defending (to the death, if needed) and celebrating, and neither can be done if we forget what they represent and why they exist.

Happy Independence Day Americans! Ready for some beer, brats, burgers, ribs, chicken, corn, coleslaw, watermelon, chocolate chip cookies, and plenty of red, white, and blue.

Laugh at U of SC

I get a lot of pleasure in laughing at U of SC fans during the summer months. The site is making predictions on the games and, of course, has them beating UNC in game 1. They may beat UNC but it is funny reading post like this saying the cocks are loaded on offense.

We are loaded on offense and should be able to put up a lot of points. Amazing how far we have progressed in just 2 years from the complete disaster that Muschamp left on that side of the ball plus all the injuries. Defense is going a question mark this year. Muschamp left some players on that side of the ball, but some are gone. We will probably have to win in a shootout. 49-42 Gamecocks.

Roller coaster riders stuck upside down for hours at Wisconsin festival

Festivalgoers got more of an adventure than they bargained for Sunday when a roller coaster ride got stuck at a fair in Wisconsin, leaving them hanging upside down for hours.

Eight passengers were left suspended when a mechanical failure stalled the ride at the Forest County Festival in Crandon, Wisconsin, the Crandon Fire Department said.

“There was a mechanical failure with the ride where it became stuck up in the upright position. The ride was recently inspected by the state of Wisconsin here on site,” fire department Capt. Brennan Cook told CNN affiliate WJFW.

Videos on social media and video taken by WJFW show a rescuer climbing up the side of the Fireball ride, while passengers wait upside down.

“Our department has never experienced a situation like we did (Sunday),” Erica Kostichka from Antigo Fire/EMS told CNN affiliate WAOW.

The passengers and the crews there to help them were harnessed to keep everyone safe during the rescue, Kostichka said.

An off-duty firefighter with specialized ropes rescue training happened to be on the scene and advised the Crandon Fire Department on potential rescue options, according to a joint news release Tuesday from the fire department and Crandon Area Rescue Squad.

Due to the height of the ride, special equipment and rescue teams were called in to help, the news release said.

Passengers waited for a ladder truck with a 100-foot platform to come from 45 minutes away, the release said. Firefighters from three cities assisted the Crandon Fire Department in the rescue.

The first passenger got back to solid ground at 3:20 p.m. CT, about two hours after emergency crews were dispatched, the news release said. The last passenger reached the ground at 5:01 p.m. – more than three hours after the ride stalled.

“Families are being reunited with people as they come down off of the ride from the rescuers and everybody seems to be doing as best as they can, given the circumstances,” Cook told WJFW.

Nine patients were treated by emergency medical services and one person was transported to Aspirus Rhinelander Hospital by ambulance, according to the release.

Ten fire vehicles, nine ambulances and 50 people from three counties helped rescue the passengers, the fire department said.

The ordeal came two days after a father spotted a crack in a steel support pillar at the top of a roller coaster at Carowinds amusement park in Charlotte, North Carolina. That ride was closed for inspection and repair.

Crandon is in northern Wisconsin, about 30 miles east of Rhinelander.
