Sucks for these kids. Probably not much playing time this year to start with, but I feel bad for any kid who gets hurt.
South Carolina has lost two receivers to injury.
Freshman Jerad Washington, a third-team wide receiver from Jacksonville, Fla., suffered a broken left leg in Sunday night’s practice and is expected to miss the remainder of the season.
“Please pray for my son Jerad Washington. He just broke his leg in practice. About to go into surgery,” Jerad’s father, Reggie, said via Twitter.
Redshirt freshman Shaq Davidson of Gaffney will have surgery on both knees in the next six weeks and miss the season, coach Steve Spurrier said. Davidson tore a knee ligament during practice.
“And he’s scheduled to have surgery on his other knee in about six weeks. It had been bothering him also,” Spurrier said. “He’ll have his second redshirt year this year.”
Injury update. Senior tight end Jerell Adams, South Carolina’s starter did not practice Sunday due to a hamstring injury. Adams expects to be ready for Thursday night’s game. Freshman walk-on Hayden Hurst and true freshman Kyle Markway are listed as the second- and third-team tight ends on the depth chart.
“He sort of pulled his hamstring the other day he said, but he should be fine to go by Thursday night,” Spurrier said.
Other players who were injured or wore yellow jerseys Tuesday night were center Cody Waldrop (right ankle), tight end Connor Redmond (back), kicker Joseph Charlton (back), cornerback Shannon James (wrist), quarterback Gage Pucci (knee) and safety Antoine Wilder (right knee sprain).
Rounding into shape. The Gamecocks feel they are well-prepared physically for North Carolina’s fast pace.
“I think we’re in excellent condition,” Spurrier said. “Someone mentioned when we were doing our run across the field drills after practice yesterday that most of the guys did not seem to struggle as they have in the past. Everyone was making their times OK, so I think it’s a well-conditioned team with a good attitude, but again we have to go play, kick it off just to find out what we’re all about this year.”
Famous visitor. Former Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre visited South Carolina’s Saturday practice and spoke to the team. Favre’s daughter was making a recruiting visit with the Gamecocks volleyball team.
“So Brett came by for a visit,” Spurrier said. “He was amazed at our facilities. He said, ‘You know, I live in Hattiesburg (Miss.) so I’m out there at Southern Miss all the time, but you guys don’t know how good you got it right here.’”
Tickets update. Almost 20,000 tickets remain for Thursday’s game, Will Webb, executive director of the Charlotte Sports Foundation, said Sunday.
