Atl overpromised and underdelivered to the Braves for years. It was a no-brainer for the Braves to move. The city of Atlanta was GIVEN Turner Field. The Atlanta Olympic Committee built it and the braves paid to convert it. No public money went into it.That's probably true. So why didn't ATL do anything about the awful surroundings of Turner Field?
I'm not in ATL, but from an outsider's perspective, it would sure seem more attractive to attend a game with a shorter commute, less traffic, nicer surroundings, etc.
It wasn't the Braves' obligation to choose a worse option for their franchise just to support a municipality. It was the municipality's job to support a franchise that - as you say - brought a financial and emotional boost to its residents.
Here is a map of the Braves Season Ticket Holders at the time of the move. For something like 80%, the drive to the stadium is opposite of traffic. They are coming from generally north east to south west and afternoon traffic in that area is heading north. The location is genius and honestly unique to anywhere in Atlanta. Traffic around the stadium is a breeze going to the games. Unlike Turner Field when that same percentage had to go through town and through traffic to get there.
