83-year-old Justice Stephen Breyer will retire from the US Supreme Court at the end of the current term after 27 years on the bench.
Breyer, who was nominated by former President Bill Clinton, is currently one of the three liberal justices serving on the highest court of the land.
Breyer’s retirement while the Democrats control the Senate will allow Joe Biden to appoint a far-left justice to replace him.
Joe Biden has pledged to nominate a black woman to the Supreme Court.

NBC News reported:

Justice Stephen Breyer will step down from the Supreme Court at the end of the current term, according to people familiar with his thinking.
Breyer is one of the three remaining liberal justices, and his decision to retire after more than 27 years on the court allows President Joe Biden to appoint a successor who could serve for several decades and, in the short term, maintain the current 6-3 split between conservative and liberal justices.
At 83, Breyer is the court’s oldest member. Liberal activists have urged him for months to retire while Democrats hold both the White House and the Senate. They contended that Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg stayed too long despite her history of health problems and should have stepped down during the Obama administration.

Earlier Wednesday NBC reported liberal Supreme Court justice Stephen Breyer would be retiring after 27 years on the bench.

This was inevitable. The left couldn’t risk not replacing an octogenarian Justice while they control the presidency and senate. They will lose congress in November and have a lame duck president and no bench for 2024. This had to happen in 2022.

Add to that Biden’s horrible public perception and approval ratings and here’s and easy win for him. He needs this badly as a distraction from his poor leadership. This will be a hard one for him to screw up, but as Obama said, never underestimate Joe’s ability to do just that.

I find it amazing that it’s totally acceptable to prequalify the candidate based on both gender and race like Biden has done. Imagine going to HR and asking for only black women candidates for a job vacancy, or only Hispanic men, or only…

Whatever though. The SC will remain conservative, which will hopefully shield us from any dramatic shifts left. Hopefully an extremely bright, qualified candidate who believes in the political impartiality of the Court is selected.

^ all these things ... Just imagine being a Justice on the court with the knowledge that the ONLY reasons youre sitting there is because you checked the right boxes. I want to be clear, if Biden appoints a Black Woman, I think that is fantastic! wonderful! BUT, saying/promising that you will only appoint a Black Woman, completely undermines the appointee and their tenure as a Justice

... even though the individual Justices have their biases, and will certainly voice their bias in their dissent, I think most of the time they get their decisions right. I really cant think of a decision in recent memory that was overtly right or left. The current court, with its "conservative" majority, have passed down some judgements that have left Republicans angry .....(((shurg))) ..... The Justices are above the circus that is Washington and they treat their job seriously

Welcome to corporate America.......I was exec layer and ran a $1.2b P&L at a big public company until 2020 and we had CEO level enforced gender and diversity hire targets. Basically, I was mandated to only hire women from 2016-2019 and then minorities starting in 2019 to ensure we hit a diversity quota at senior/exec levels.

one thing is for certain, you cannot run a high growth business effectively if you're not hiring on an absolute talent at all costs methodology.
