This morning’s workout is the closing period to the first session of the Swinney Camp.

We also come to the conclusion of the three-day stay from North Charleston (S.C.) Fort Dorchester four-star offensive lineman John Simpson.

Simpson (6-5, 298), by our accounts, has enjoyed his time on campus.

Our information suggests Simpson is unlikely to pop for Clemson today. While the Tigers would certainly love to get him in the boat, our sense is there is a confidence in Clemson’s standing with him as the trip wraps up.

Simpson was wooed by Alabama during his lengthy camp stay there last week, and he has a few more visits in mind – South Carolina, in particular.

But Clemson has led for three-fourths of a year and has developed the strongest relationships around him by far, with those being reinforced these last few days.

With five tight ends slated to be on scholarship entering the 2017 season, Clemson has not been planning to take a prospect at the position that cycle.

An in-state recruit might have given the Tigers food for thought.

Chapin (S.C.) 2017 tight end Will Register exceeded expectations Tuesday at the Dabo Swinney Football Camp.

Register (6-4, 240) continued his strong start to the summer camp circuit by demonstrating greater agility and athleticism than his film seemed to indicate.

Charlotte remains his lone offer, but he was deemed the top tight end recently at Tennessee’s camp as well.

Register will compete at South Carolina’s camp Friday as well as its showcase Saturday. He then will travel to Vanderbilt later this month before seeing Wake Forest and Virginia Tech next month.

A little more information on Woodstock (Ga.) Etowah 2017 Stuart Head, whom Clemson offered after the Tuesday morning session.

Head (6-4, 205) is listed as a safety by Rivals.com and spent some of the session at that position.

But defensive coordinator Brent Venables also worked Head out at linebacker, and his versatility in doing both well culminated in the offer.

Head attended four Clemson games in the fall as well as the spring game, in as much because that’s where Etowah’s players were taken on Saturdays.

Georgia Tech is one to watch as this recruitment unfolds. He camps at North Carolina and Duke this weekend, then Vanderbilt next week.

As he stood watching drills Tuesday afternoon, Central (S.C.) D.W. Daniel 2018 linebacker Jake Venables was pulled aside by Swinney.

Swinney congratulated Venables on earning his first offer via Clemson – a decision Swinney had made without consulting Jake’s father, defensive coordinator Brent Venables.

During a subsequent break in the action, Venables let his father know in what was surely a pretty cool moment for both.

Jake (6-1, 190) tweaked his back at Oklahoma’s camp during the weekend, so he’s sitting out the action the rest of this session in anticipation of returning perhaps Saturday.

He is scheduled to camp at UNC and N.C. State next week and could hit Texas Tech as well, with a stop at Baylor slated for next month. SMU – coached by former fellow Clemson coordinator Chad Morris – could get a camp visit soon, too.

Venables is expected to let the process play out a considerable length of time before giving any thought toward a commitment.

EXTRA POINTS …

This morning’s workout is the closing period to the first session of the Swinney Camp.

Today’s guest list includes the additions of Spencer (N.C.) North Rowan 2017 end/linebacker Zion Debose. Debose (6-2, 210) has picked up recent offers from N.C. State, UNC and Duke.

Cowpens (S.C.) Broome 2017 outside linebacker D’Marco Jackson will also be on hand.

Forsyth (Ga.) Mary Persons 2017 four-star defensive end Malik Herring had planned to attend Tuesday’s workout before a personal situation cancelled those plans. He won’t be able to attend Saturday because the ACT.

Gibsonton (Fla.) East Bay cornerback K.J. Sails said Clemson’s staff told him he should know within a week or two whether an offer will materialize. Sails picked up a Pittsburgh offer Tuesday night.

In a potentially related matter, New Orleans (La.) Holy Cross cornerback Kyle Meyers camps at Florida State today in search of an offer. Meyers (5-11, 170) earned a Clemson offer Monday and is also considering Ole Miss and Mississippi State.
