There you go again lumping everyone who supports Trump in 1 category. I worked on McCain’s 2008 campaign and was an avid supporter of his for the better part of 15 years. He was a great guy but fell completely off the reservation the last few years of his life. That’s why folks say RINO about him nowadays.

The democrats only recently started liking McCain because he was essentially a fiscal conservative only. That and the constant sparing between him and Trump. John McCain's funeral was way too full of Washingtonians who used the death of a Senator as a platform to give yet another political speech.

When I flew for United we went through a tough contract negotiation in the summer of 2000. He (McCain) publicly went off on us, the standard “greedy airline pilot” spiel.

There were still a good many Vietnam vets flying for us back then and let’s just say I found out that he wasn’t particularly well liked by many of those who knew him. I remember a comment posted on our bulletin board in Chicago Flight Ops that said “knew him in the Navy and we were happy he was shot down.” I was like “wow, ouch!”

That is true though. We throw the “hero” word around with far too much ease nowadays.

That said, you’re not a “hero” just for serving. McCain isn’t a “hero” for joining the service and flying fighters. He is a hero because of the way he conducted himself in captivity.

Would have been quite a legacy on his "character" for such a supposed great politician to rise above his feelings getting hurt by a sarcastic President and helping roll back one of the absolute worst pieces of legislation (obamacare) in decades with his single vote. That would have been something to underscore true greatness with in your final years. Not simply voting along party line, but voting in line with conscience and what is right versus out of infantile vengeance. That would showcase tangible substance and make a statement about what pure heroism looks like. So much for politics and character being mutually exclusive.

Like him, dislike him...that's what his legacy entails and why those who spent lifetimes opposing most of what he believed in magically coming out of hiding as among his biggest fans. McCain has lots of good qualities about him over the years but he ended it more as a feuding pawn for the left to many. The President deserves to be criticized for some of his comments. No doubt. But McCain lowered himself at a time when his character could have driven that home better in one vote than the constant tit for tat buttburt marathon with a President he knows isn't backing down either.
