The #12 seed is the lowest ranked conference champion that makes CFP
Clemson could be this but if SMU goes (the momentum seems that way at moment), you can’t have Clemson be a higher seed (12) than SMU at 11 as last at large team in.
So what I think happens is commitee has Clemson jump AZ State for beating a higher ranked team (SMU) even if AZ State is playing better and deserves it and Clemson is able to secure #4
AZ State takes 12 and SMU gets 11
