In an attempt to get familiar will something about our opponent, I am posting the 2016-17 team statistics from last season. Obviously, this is a new season with players gone and new players in their spots, so it is advised to take this with a BIG grain of salt. Every stat could be scrutinized for new personnel. However, both teams return the same coaches for the most part on both sides of the ball. Let's get the stats out there, and we can all discuss where we think modifiers should be (i.e., like Stidham at Q, probably gives a + modifier to their passing offense, or Kelly Bryant at QB for us + modifies our rush offense)
Notes: Top 30 is in RED, Bottom 28 is in BLUE
Ranking out of 128 Division 1 Schools:
Clemson Offense, Auburn Defense:
Generally, you probably could upgrade Clemson's rushing offense below. With a veteran offensive line and a QB in Kelly Bryant who can and will run more than Deshaun Watson, I would expect to average no less than 200 ypg minimum. That would make this Clemson offense Top 40 in rush offense last year. Auburn lost DE Carl Lawson and DT Montravius Adams in the offseason, but they return their excellent linebacking core and their two starting cornerbacks.
Clemson Rushing Offense: 71st (169.73 ypg)
Clemson Rushing Attempts Per Game: 68th (39.40 rapg)
Clemson Rushing Yards Per Attempt: 73rd (4.31 ypc)
Clemson Rushing TDs: 27th (30 rushing TDs)
Clemson Fumbles Lost: 101st (11 Fumbles Lost)
Clemson Time of Possession: 55th Auburn Rushing Defense: 27th (132.77 ypg)
Auburn Rushing Defense: 27th (132.77 ypg)
Auburn Rushing Yards Per Attempt Defense: 25th (3.74 ypc)
Auburn Rushing TDs Allowed: 4th (8 Rushing TD allowed)
Auburn Forced Fumbles Per Game: 97th (0.62 ffpg)
Auburn Tackles for Loss Per Game: 42nd (6.39 tflpg)
On the same note, I think it's a safe bet to downgrade the passing offense compared to last year with Deshaun Watson, who threw for 334 yards per game. If you assume Bryant throws for 250 ypg, that would be a Top 50 offense last year. Clemson's offense passed for 312 yards last week against Kent State.
Clemson Passing Offense: 7th (333.9 ypg)
Clemson Pass Efficiency: 18th (152.18)
Clemson Pass Completion %: 7th (67.1%)
Clemson Passing Attempts Per Game: 8th (41.9 papg)
Clemson Passing Yards Per Attempt: 31st (8.0 ypa)
Clemson Passing TDs: 4th (45 Passing TDs)
Clemson Interceptions Thrown: 120th (17 Ints)
Clemson Sacks Given Up: 22nd (1.33 spg)
Auburn Passing Defense: 67th (229.2 ypg)
Auburn Pass Eff. Defense: 22nd (116.83)
Auburn Passing TDs Allowed: 17th (14 Passing TDs allowed)
Auburn Interceptions Per Game: 60th (0.85 ipg)
Auburn Sacks per Game: 75th (1.92 spy)
Clemson's offense has been efficient on third downs for the past six season under Dabo, averaging at least Top 50 in the category. Five of those season were Top 35 or better in efficiency. Look for it to continue under Kelly Bryant, in my opinion.
Clemson offense 3rd down conversion rate: 8th (50.21%)
Clemson offense 4th down conversion rate: 22nd (60.00%)
Clemson offense Red Zone TD conversion rate: 14th (72.37%)
Auburn defense 3rd down conversion rate schools: 23rd (34.83%)
Auburn defense 4th down conversion rate: 63rd (52.17%)
Auburn defense Red Zone TD conversion rate: 3rd (41.86%)
Clemson Total Offense: 12th (503.7 ypg)
Clemson Yards Per Play: 34th (6.19 ypp)
Clemson Scoring Offense: 14th (39.2 ppg)
Auburn Total Defense: 28th (361.9 ypg)
Auburn Yards Per Play Defense: 24th (5.07 ypp)
Auburn Scoring Defense: 7th (17.1 ppg)
Auburn Penalty Yards Per Game: 6th (36.5 pypg)
Auburn Turnover Margin: 42nd (+0.23 per game)
Clemson Defense, Auburn Offense:
Auburn has Stidham at their QB, who projects to upgrade their passing offense compared to last year. Their rushing game was robust last year, however they did lose three of their senior OLs after last year. I would expect a dip in their rushing production, however it should continue to be Top 30, at 220 ypg+ this year. May also take a dip if they are using more plays to pass to create some balance compared to last year.
Auburn Rushing Offense: 6th (271.31 ypg)
Auburn Rushing Attempts Per Game: 8th (49.62 rapg)
Auburn Rushing Yards Per Attempt: 17th (5.47 ypc)
Auburn Rushing TDs: 16th (33 Rushing TDs)
Auburn Fumbles Lost: 47th (8 Fumbles Lost)
Auburn Time of Possession: 77th
Clemson Rushing Defense: 24th(129.60 ypg)
Clemson Rushing Yards Per Attempt Defense: 24th (3.70 ypc)
Clemson Rushing TDs Allowed: 46th (20 Rushing TDs allowed)
Clemson Forced Fumbles Per Game: 91st (0.67 ffpg)
Clemson Tackles for Loss Per Game: 3rd (8.67 tflpg)
As stated above, with Stidham as their QB, I would upgrade their passing offense compared to last year. I am assuming a Top 50 passing offense (similar to Clemson's assumption) for 250 ypg+.
Auburn Passing Offense: 112th (219.4 ypg)
Auburn Pass Efficiency: 52nd (135.17)
Auburn Pass Completion %: 32nd (61.6%)
Auburn Passing Attempts Per Game: 120th (22.0 papg)
Auburn Passing Yards Per Attempt: 49th (7.6 ypa)
Auburn Passing TDs: 110th (12 Passing TDs)
Auburn Interceptions Thrown: 5th (6 Ints)
Auburn Sacks Given Up: 27th (1.46 spg)
Clemson Passing Defense: 14th (181.9 ypg)
Clemson Pass Eff. Defense: 4th (100.21)
Clemson Passing TDs Allowed: 12th (13 Passing TDs allowed)
Clemson Interceptions Per Game: 11th (1.33 ipg)
Clemson Sacks per Game: 10th (3.27 spg)
Under Brent Venables, Clemson has been TOP 5 in 3rd down defense the past FOUR SEASONS! This may be our best defense in awhile, if you offense can sustain some drives to keep them fresh. Look for us to continue to dominate this statistic (27% - 30%)
Auburn offense 3rd down conversion rate: 53rd (41.76%)
Auburn offense 4th down conversion rate schools: 80th (47.62%)
Auburn offense Red Zone TD conversion rate: 97th (56.36%)
Clemson defense 3rd down conversion rate: 4th (27.93%)
Clemson defense 4th down conversion rate: 32nd (41.67%)
Clemson defense Red Zone TD conversion rate: 46th (57.89%)
Auburn Total Offense: 42nd (440.8 ypg)
Auburn Yards Per Play: 37th(6.13 ypp)
Auburn Scoring Offense: 49th (31.2 ppg)
Clemson Total Defense: 8th (311.5 ypg)
Clemson Yards Per Play Defense: 5th (4.63 ypp)
Clemson Scoring Defense: 10th (18.0 ppg)
Clemson Penalty Yards Per Game: 85th (58.0 pypg)
Clemson Turnover Margin: 71st (-0.07 per game)
Special Teams Stats:
Clemson lost Punter Andy Teasdall, which alone should improve our punting average, I assume. Last week our two punters averaged 49 ypp. Auburn also starts a new punter this year in Ian Shannon, who is a slight downgrade from last year. Clemson returns consistent placekicker Huegel for a third year. Auburn returns fourth year starter placekicker Daniel Carlson, who is elite.
Clemson punt returns: 62nd (7.94 yppr)
Auburn punt return defense: 8th (3.17 yppr)
Auburn punt returns: 24th (10.69 yppr)
Clemson punt return defense: 28th (5.20 ypkr)
