WILMINGTON — Laney had J.H Rose on its heels early with great special teams and defensive plays, but in the end the Buccaneers couldn’t slow down the high-powered Rampants in a 56-44 home loss on Friday.
Rose dominated the second half, outscoring Laney 35-16 after halftime.
Led by the play of standout receiver Cornell Powell and quarterback Asa Alexander, the Rampants chalked up 514 total yards.
Powell scored three touchdowns in the first half and finished with more than 100 yards receiving, and Alexander finished with 376 passing yards and five scores.
With Laney leading 36-35 in the fourth quarter, Powell made a clutch reception on fourth down and Jacques Suggs capped the drive with a short scoring run with 9:13 remaining to put Rose in the lead for the final time.
With the Bucs down 7-0 after Powell’s first score, Sherod Sidberry blocked his second punt of the game, this time recovering it in the end zone for a score with 1:49 left in the opening quarter.
On the ensuing drive, Jamius Beckett intercepted a pass and sprinted 37 yards for a score to put the Bucs ahead 14-7 in the waning seconds of the quarter.
Powell — who had a 24-yard TD catch in the opening minutes — struck again in the second by hauling in a 52-yarder from Alexander, but Laney answered with a long drive capped by a run from a yard out by Imeek Watkins to make it 21-14 Bucs.
Ryan Williams stretched the lead to 28-14 when he pulled in a 16-yard scoring pass from Trevon Greene.
Powell answered immediately by taking the ensuing kickoff 87 yards to paydirt to slice the margin to 28-21.
