I’ve been struggling for several years with what was originally (and incorrectly) diagnosed as shingles that turned out to be trigeminal neuralgia. This fun affliction causes cataclysmically painful “seizures” on the left side of my face that started as lasting minutes and now last for hours. They used to call it “the suicide disease” because of how painful it is and how few treatments there used to be for it.

Next week they’re going to open up my melon to reroute the blood vessel that’s pinching the nerve in my face through a procedure called microvascular decompression. As brain surgeries go, my doctor tells me it’s not a major one which is easy for him to say. They’re not in my gray matter, so I like to think of it more as nerve surgery in my head — it gets me by at least.

So to paraphrase one of my favorites, Stuart Scott, when you’re on your knees looking up at the big man, send one up for your boy in Nashville. I appreciate it.
