I don't know what else to do with this information except post about it, but I was surprised to realize this. Even though this is his 22nd season at Clemson and 16th full time as head coach I still think of Dabo as being pretty young for a head coach - or maybe now more like middle aged. Instinctually it feels like 55 is about average age for a HC.

But out of 12 head coaches in this year's CFP he's actually the second oldest, only behind 63-year old Curt Cignetti. In fact there are as many coaches in their 30s as there are 50+ (4 total). Here's the full list:
  1. Curt Cignetti (63)
  2. Dabo Swinney (55)
  3. James Franklin (52)
  4. Steve Sarkisian (50)
  5. Kirby Smart (48)
  6. Josh Heupel (46)
  7. Ryan Day (45)
  8. Rhett Lashlee (41)
  9. Marcus Freeman (38)
  10. Dan Lanning (38)
  11. Spencer Danielson (36)
  12. Kenny Dillingham (34)
What's ironic about this is Dabo would not have been more than the 3rd oldest in the past three iterations of the 4-team playoff (he is 11 whole days younger than Sonny Dykes). He was otherwise the 2nd oldest in 2019 and 2017; 3rd oldest in 2020 and 2018; and the youngest in 2016 and 2015.

Finally, a survey of the rest of the CFP top 25 shows that there are only two other coaches of ranked teams older than Dabo - Jeff Monken and Deion Sanders, both 57.

I guess Dabo is an elder statesman now?
