A new study finds a strong association between cannabis use disorder (ie: weed addiction) and schizophrenia in young men. As many as 30% cases of the mental disorder in men 21 to 30 could've been prevented by averting cannabis use disorder.

The new study, according to @NIDA, "adds to existing evidence [see the link] suggesting that the proportion of new schizophrenia cases that may be attributed to cannabis use disorder has consistently increased over the past five decades." 3/

Note that I should've written "might have been prevented" rather than "could've been prevented", given the uncertainty of the research. If only I could edit tweets!

You do know that association is not the same as causation right?

You could just as easily say that that there's an association between blue jeans and armed robbery because a lot of folks that rob stores wear blue jeans. That's all they are measuring... young men with schizophrenia and whether they used weed or not.

Frankly I'd think that the reverse of what they are saying is probably true. Kids with schizophrenia KNOW that they are thinking, feeling, and sometimes even seeing things that aren't normal or even there. It's not surprising that they'd try and self medicate to take the edge off.

That being said, I've read some papers on this sort of thing and it's worrisome enough that I'd certainly not recommend that kids do it. It's a psycho active drug and should not be used by minors. LITERALLY no one thinks it's a good idea for kids to smoke weed.

It's been known for a while that cannabis use can trigger those with schizophrenic tendencies. But you have to be schizophrenic first. If you make it past your 26th bday and aren't schizophrenic.. congrats you won't developed it.
