FDA approves Paxlovid (positive COVID news)

Promising COVID treatment got EUA by the FDA today. The data on this medication is really strong. Randomized double-blinded study of over 2,200 people showed an 89% reduction in risk of COVID-19 related hospitalization or death from any cause compared to placebo. No deaths seen in the treatment arm (within 3 days of onset) of the study compared to 1.6% deaths in the placebo arm at 28 days later. Other notes on it: 7% placebo were admitted to the hospital compared to 1% of the treated. For those researchers in the crowd, the statistical significance of the results was high at p<0.0001.

Basically, this is a really promising treatment that got approved in parts of Europe last month and has been something many of us have been watching. Initially, the problem will be availability but the US government is buying 10 million treatments worth of pills to be produced in 2022. Pfizer hopes to make 80 million treatment courses by the end of 2022.

Still not a substitute for getting a vaccine, in my professional opinion and the opinion of the drug researchers. Treating this thing in combination with vaccinations not only will save lives in the near future, but is a huge step to really reducing future outbreaks.
