This was the straw that broke the camel's back for me. Riley is the biggest disappointment we've had since Willy Korn. That was the most timidly called game I've seen in years. Y'all can beat up on Wes all you want, and much of it is deserved ... but Wes coached his azz off today. We pressured Sellers constantly but he just made plays because he's a baller. Dude runs like DW4 and is harder to bring down. That isn't Wes's fault. Go back and look how many times we had guys surrounding Sellers and he breaks free. Wes dialed the right number on those plays. I'm not defending Wes overall, just pointing out that he did not lose this game.
Back to Riley ... some random thoughts:
- Instead of trying to score before the half, we let the clock run out because we were scared of Scar getting the ball back with 30 seconds and a few timeouts. At that point it was obvious Riley was calling the game scared, and you knew that if we got a lead he'd try to sit on it. That came to pass.
- We ran one sweep to 0 for about 9 yards in the first half. Abandoned after that.
- Take the tunnel screen and burn it. Never run it again.
- On 3rd and short to medium yardage, Riley loves to throw the 30yd prayer down the sidelines. It's almost always a garbage play call with a 20% chance of success. When it does succeed, it's because 12 or 1 made a play - not because they were, you know, open.
- We have one offensive skill guy who has a long NFL career ahead of him and his name is Brinningstool. We don't target him until we're losing with the game on the line and Riley realized "uh oh, we're about to lose because I've called this game like a puzzy." On our last drive, we target 9 twice with success both times, march right down the field.
- I blame Riley for the last play. Our coaches know that Cade is a spaz. Grab him by the facemask and tell him that both plays must go TO THE ENDZONE. if we don't score on 2nd or 3rd down with throw to THE ENDZONE, then kick. Just mind blowing BS on that last play. No excuse.
Riley is an absolute JAG. Let him go to USC and help his brother win 7 games. He brings zero to the table with regard to offensive innovation and has no feel whatsoever for play calling.
