Good Morning fine folks,
SInce the US Womerns won the world cup on Sunday, I have been wondering how a fresh look at the rules of soccer might enhance it in the USA. I don't want to change the game, just some minor tweaks.
1. Dirty Refs; I believe the saying should go, "Death, Taxes, and Dirty Refs." Its probably inevitable that Money + Soccer = Unbalacnced Officaiating, but some of these minor rule changes would take the power out from behind the whistle, and place it in the rule book. Soccer and basketball seem like the most arbitrary when officiatiing a live action game. In some ways I feel sorry for these guys. Could you imagine the pressure on a college football ref to call a game crooked, if the NCAA was as corrupt as FIFA?
2. Flopping; Much like basketball, this is the scourage of the sport. I applaud the steps basketball has taken to remove it from play. Soccer needs to do the same. That $#^t has got to go! I also applaud the Women for not flopping during the recent World Cup. DO YOU HEAR THAT MEN??? GET UP OFF THE GROUND!!! TO CALL YOU A B^T@# WOULD BE AN OFFENSE TO WOMEN EVERYWHERE!!! Simple fix: Review it on the fly. If you flop, you get a yellow card, its that simple. I believe some steps have been taken in this direction. Maybe some of you more avid fans can correct or clarify for me.
3. Clock Management; This goes back to the refs adding time to the end of a match. I don't like not knowing down to the fricking second how long a match will be. Subsequently there are no buzzer beaters. Just stop the clock when a players goes down, or when there is a corner/goal kick. Run it just like basketball.
4. Substitutions; I don't like the fact that you can only sub three players. Sub like baseball, once you come out, you're out for the game. If a game stops because you are rolling around on the ground like a possum and you must recieve the "magical elixir healing spray," have a seat buddy. I think they should empliment a "pit road" for injured players that just need a quick ankle tape up. Get to the sidelines, so the team doctor can "heal you", and your team plays a man down until you can get back on the field.
5. Shootouts; I love shootouts, but move them back to the edge of the box. The current make percentage is almost 75%-80% (fact check please). I would like to see it more of a "dual, gun slinger showdown." Give the keeper a little more time to make a stop, as opposed to diving the wrong way half of the time.
Some of you avid soccer fans can provide more insight as to how this might change the game possivtively/negatively.
