On occasion we use the blog to share news and information about great causes, and the ManUpstate movement certainly fits that criteria.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness month, and here in South Carolina the awareness should be particularly acute given this state's ranking among the worst in instances of domestic violence and sexual assault.
The Palmetto State is No. 1 in the nation for women killed by their husbands or partners. Ugh.
Dabo Swinney, among other prominent figures, has joined the cause. Swinney has done a wonderful job doing everything he can to fight breast cancer, and he was eager to join this movement as well. You can watch his testimony here on the group's Facebook page.
On Tuesday evening in Greenville, there's an important event taking place at Warehouse Theatre:
Join ManUPstate for an evening of dialogue as we watch parts of the film, The Mask You Live In, followed by a community dialogue and discussion regarding our culture's definitions of masculinity, how boys and young men struggle to remain true to themselves within these cultural parameters and how men can play a role in preventing and ending violence against women and girls.
This event is geared especially for men who are fathers, coaches, community leaders, student leaders, mentors or any man who plays a role the lives of boys or other men. Fathers who have sons or daughters who are high school aged or older are encouraged to bring their children along!
This event is free of charge, but seating is limited. Beverages and light refreshments will be available for purchase before the event begins, starting at 6:30pm.
Here's the web site for ManUpstate.
And here's a really touching personal story from Patrick Sapp:
