Friday Insider Notes

New name, same game.
When you recruit at Clemson's level, you're going to cross paths with the handful of peers at your level time and again.
The Tigers dispensed their latest offer a week ago to Chesapeake (Va.) four-star safety Sherrod Covil.
Ohio State jumped in with an offer Thursday to Covil (5-10, 190), who released a top-11 last weekend.
Safe bet to make that a lead dozen now.
We would suggest that the high-end schools are making sure they have options.
New Clemson offer - four-star DB Sherrod Covil of Chesapeake. Va.
Clemson and Ohio State are mutually involved for Pleasant Hill (Iowa) Southeast Polk four-star Xavier Nwankpa, Las Vegas (Nev.) Bishop Gorman four-star Zion Branch and Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy four-star Keon Sabb.
The Buckeyes are expected to bring in two safeties this cycle.
In other words, just remember they can't take them all.
Ohio State also followed Clemson's lead Thursday in offering Rancho Santa Marita (Calif.) Santa Margarita Catholic defensive tackle Hero Kanu.
**** A fascinating dynamic in play this weekend at Florida State.
Our colleagues at Warchant.com have published a list of more than 75 uncommitted prospects expected to attend FSU's spring game Saturday.
The NCAA dead period is ongoing, so recruits still cannot meet with coaches or football staff. But it's an interesting approach to fire your bullet in trying to attract so many high-profile targets whereby the value comes in perhaps checking out facilities, hanging out with players afterward or -- most likely -- just trying to create a buzz and collective momentum around FSU recruiting.
Among the relevant Clemson targets and candidates penciled in as guests include Lakeland (Fla.) four-star defensive lineman Gabe Dindy, Opa Locke (Fla.) Monsignor Pace four-star defensive end Shemar Stewart, Hollywood (Fla.) Chaminade-Madonna four-star defensive end Kenyatta Jackson, Miami (Fla.) Gulliver offensive lineman Julian Armella and Columbus (Ga.) Carver tackle Elijah Pritchett.
Significant sophomores include Suwanee (Ga.) North Gwinnett four-star safety Caleb Downs, Alabaster (Ala.) Thompson four-star corner Tony Mitchell, Miami (Fla.) Edison receiver Nathaniel Joseph, Atlanta (Ga.) Westlake four-star defensive back Avieon Terrell and Lakeland (Fla.) Lake Gibson four-star corner Cormani McClain.
We will see how Mike Norvell and staff coach. But our returns have long pointed to Norvell being the most potent recruiter among the coaches at the Sunshine State's Big Three. Just getting a large portion of this list on campus would stand as supporting evidence.
**** While attention is justifiably focused on the transfer portal, Clemson's basketball staff does continue its effort with high school recruiting as well.
In-state four-star Julian Phillips has two-dozen offers.
Network analyst Jamie Shaw provided an update this week on Blythewood (S.C.) four-star junior forward Julian Phillips.
Phillips (6-8, 195), ranked No. 28 nationally, told Rivals.com that he talks most with Ohio State, Florida State, Wake Forest, Alabama and Clemson. UNC, Auburn and UGA are involved but have not offered.
"I talk with assistant coach Antonio Dean a lot and have talked with head coach Brad Brownell, too," Phillips said. "They are really close to home, which is pretty cool, they also have a great team who played really well this season, made it to the tournament and all.”
Phillips said he plans to keep his recruitment open through the AAU season.
"I want to go to a school where I can come in my freshman year and play some pretty good minutes, you know make an impact," he said. "I want a school who wants me and has a family atmosphere, one who will welcome me with open arms. Academics are important too, want to go to a place that has a good network so when the ball stops bouncing, they can take care of me in that way also.”
