Friday Insider Notes
By: Paul Strelow
One of Clemson's leading cornerback targets, Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy four-star Daylen Everette, teased via social media Wednesday a recruiting development to come next Thursday.
We do not expect Everette (6-1, 180), ranked No. 65 nationally by Rivals.com, to be releasing a commitment announcement.
Our information points to the greater likelihood of a final schools list.
Recruiting activity is about to pick up for Bradenton (Fla.) four-star DB and longtime Clemson target Daylen Everette.
Clemson, UNC and Georgia would appear shoo-ins to make the last cut -- certainly if Everette intends to retain any suspense in his eventual decision.
Everette visited Clemson for its spring game early this month and has held the Tigers in high standing for the duration of the process.
Yet we reported in the wake of that trip that UNC was believed to have closed the gap if not level the field, as Everette and his family stopped by Chapel Hill en route to their Virginia home.
Furthermore, Everette's parents attended UNC's spring game last weekend.
UGA is set to draw an official visit June 18, and the Tar Heels have been working to secure an official visit the next weekend (June 25) to get perhaps a final say before his summer decision.
A potentially pertinent recent nugget is that Everette's brother, Donovan, announced his transfer as a freshman defensive end from Navy to Elon.
Elon is about a 45-minute drive from UNC, which would give the Tar Heels the advantage of greater proximity and convenience for the Norfolk, Va., family.
Clemson's staff continues to hope to attract Everette for the June 12-13 Elite Retreat.
A source close to the prospect recently told us they are continuing to work on a visit date with Clemson.
**** Longtime Tigerillustrated.com subscribers know I've long framed in-state recruiting as having vastly overrated importance.
Whom you get means more than where they're from, and winning the in-state battle is more about currying favor with a fan base than providing material returns.
Moreover, we've characterized Georgia as the true location where Clemson needs to be competitive and prevail in some battles, as this observer believes the Peach State to be more dependable than Florida as far as the product you get.
Well, six NFL Draft first-rounders Thursday night came from the state of Georgia. Zero from South Carolina, one from North Carolina. Florida came in behind Georgia with four, followed by California, Texas and Louisiana with three apiece.
Follow the talent.
Top 30 junior Richard Young of Lehigh Acres (Fla.) already has 28 offers on the table.
**** We don't think it's happenstance that Clemson's recent breakthrough recruiting in Texas has coincided with the successes Deshaun Watson and Nuk Hopkins experienced with the NFL's Houston franchise. Certainly not the only or even leading reasons, but a factor in the Tigers' elevated credibility and consistent exposure.
So as the Jacksonville Jaguars united Trevor Lawrence with Travis Etienne, we couldn't help but wonder whether there might not be an opportunity for a Sunshine State bump in the future.
Clemson has a history of mining Jacksonville well but has not dug into the area in recent years. There are more lucrative regions for higher-end talent in Florida, with Orlando specifically on the rise.
Yet you pair the Clemson duo with former local star C.J. Spiller now recruiting his home turf on the Tigers' behalf, and it will be interesting to gauge if Clemson gains a little more traction with the credible prospects in the vicinity.
We'll see if that resonates with Lehigh Acres (Fla.) four-star rising junior running back Richard Young or moves the needle a little further with Orlando (Fla.) Dr. Phillips 2023 four-star tackle Payton Kirkland.
Tigerillustrated.com will release its lengthy late-week recruiting insider late this morning.
