Friday Night Nuggets
By: Paul Strelow

A few nuggets, observations and thoughts as Friday media were allowed to a limited viewing window from Clemson's third bowl practice:

**** As Clemson looks to build depth and options for next season, this is going to be a big month for a couple of interior offensive linemen.

Sophomore Trent Howard and redshirting freshman Ryan Linthicum both got extended work in center drills.

Howard drew more, understandably, as he has served as the third-stringer behind Hunter Rayburn and Mason Trotter down the stretch this season.

Linthicum has largely been relegated to scout squad duty this fall, and there will be an impetus for him to challenge Howard on the depth chart come the spring.

**** Sophmore receiver E.J. Williams (upper leg injury) was up and running, sliding right in as the first-team slot in the offense's tempo drills.

Clemson quickly incorporated freshman Jake Briningstool alongside starter Davis Allen in a two tight end set, which we continue to consider favorable news the more it transpires.

**** We're not sure anyone was happier to be back out there this week than assistant coach Thomas Austin.

As an analyst, Austin has not been permitted to do on-field coaching during practices this season upon his return from Georgia State.

Austin is coaching the tight ends for the Cheez-It Bowl before, as we shared with subscribers last month, we expect him to transition to the offensive line post.

You can just sense he's glad to be back active and engaged in the action.

That has meant, though, that Austin has had to throw passes to his tight ends in drills and essentially serve as a batting practice arm at times.

It's a different look to see a former offensive lineman going through those motions, to be sure.

Tigerillustrated.com will have more from on-campus bowl workouts Saturday morning.
