Gen Mattis resigns

I hate it. I also think it’s a mistake to leave Syria

I don't. I'm sick of how the old guard Republicans think we have to be everyone's defenders.

What are they so worried about? WWIII?

Instead of spending trillions of dollars defending the world, why not let Americans carry automatic weapons and own some combat ready aircraft and for those who can afford a 2 foot thick concrete driveway some tanks?

Let us experience the true intent of the 2nd Amendment.

Gen. Mattis did an excellent job cleaning up the mess Obama made of the Middle East...he has served his country well, a great American!

But Mattis is an older gentleman & no one really expected him to be in this role for all 8 years of the Trump presidency anyway...

Next man up!
Obama's mess in the Middle East??? Think again!!! You Trumpsters have certainly gotten a whole lot of practice honing your excuse and rationalizing abilities.

Trump supporter here. I agree with most of his policies and positions, but not all. They are largely unpopular, especially with a media controlled by the Democratic Party, but they are needed IMO. I can overlook a lot of things Trump does because of this. However, this one I don’t get it. When you are in Trump’s position, you have disagreements with someone like Gen. Mattis? To me, you defer to Gen. Mattis on 100% of issues related to the military.

In less than two years, Trump has gone through

— Three chiefs of staff
— Three national security advisors
— Two Secretaries of State
— Two DHS secretaries
— Two HHS secretaries
— Two VA secretaries

With Attorney General, UN ambassador, Interior, Defense vacancies now to fill

Trump said in one of his rallies that he "knew more about ISIS than the generals do."[November 2015]

He also said , "there's nobody bigger or better at the military than I am" [June 2015, Fox News interview ]

So I guess I understand why he didn't feel the need to defer to Mattis.

Don’t like Mattis leaving one bit, but to those thinking the sky is falling should chill. Obama had 4 Secretary of Defense cabinet members. Everyone loved Obama pulling troops out from over there when he was in office. Lots of double standard if you look at things objectively here. FWIW I disagree with the Syria decision.

I think if any POTUS continually differed to Generals, we would always be in a war because that's what they do. It's their job.

I don't agree with Republicans who think Mattis knows more about issues like Syria than Trump. Truman fired Douglas MacArthur. We never should have invaded N Korea anyways. Look how that ended up.

I don't usually comment on political posts, but do you sincerely think that Donald Trump knows more about Syria and the Middle East than General Mattis? What in the world would make anyone think this other than Donald Trump telling you that?

I imagine that these guys only agreed to a couple of years. These jobs are high stress and constant. After a 30+ year in the Marines maybe these guys are just ready to dial it back a little. Or have other jobs opportunities that pay a crap more.
OK I’m sure that’s it

It’s not about defending Syria or the world, it’s about not letting Russia and China take over. And I’m not really sure wtf you’re even talking about in your second sentence. Think of the trillions of dollars as a wall around the worlds interests since you people are so caught up on a fvcking wall.

Youre right. Trump knows more about military matters in Syria than Mattis.

Lol. How this dude became the President will never not make me laugh. His quotes are literally something you'd makeup for an SNL skit.

Having served with Gen Mattis I often get asked what he is like and I always struggle how to answer. Easily the modern day George Patton which speaks to his steel eyed leadership on the battle field, but does not speak to his intellect and strategic view on the world. Whenever I was around him, even when trivial things were discussed, I felt like I was sitting in doctorate level military strategies studies.

And for those who have convinced themselves this is just an old man who is ready for retirement, you could not be more wrong. In 30 years in the Marine Corps, I have never met another person with his tireless, relentless work ethic and passion to serve his country. I'm not entirely sure the man ever slept!
Well said and thank you for your service.

"There is nobody who understands the horror of nuclear more than me" [June 2016]

"Nobody in the history of this country has ever known so much about infrastructure as Donald Trump." [July 2016]

"I know more about renewables than any human being on Earth." [April 2016]

"I used to be, George, the fair-haired boy — you know, when I was a contributor. I know more about contributions than anybody" [November 2015]

Im putting this here assuming that nobody ELSE knows more about Booker than Booker, which would make Trump the world's foremost non-Cory Booker expert on Cory Booker.

Anyway, trump is an expert on everything. He'll figure this whole thing out. I'm sure

Lol! Fear? Looks like the anti-patriot crowd is the one scared of thousands of American troops packing up their weapons and coming home.
Trump sells fear. It’s the commodity his base thrives on.
It’s sounds like you’re a supporter, hence your inability to see. Maybe time will open your eyes maybe not.

As a Trump supporter, there’s no legitimate way to defend him on this one.
Lol this is the line..... not the liberal tariffs? Not the increasing the debt? Not getting Mexico to pay for the wall? Not Trump implying numerous felons??

I’m glad he quit. We need more Trumpsters and less individual thinkers. Trump will kill the GOP. After 2020 the democratic socialist will begin killing the DNC. Win win.

LOL... Mattis is 4 years younger than the President. You need to read his resignation letter and open your eyes to what is happening and what he is telling you. This isnt just the retirement of an "older gentleman" as Trump tweeted out to you. This was clearly intended by Mattis to be a very pointed wake up call to America on the dangerous path our president is leading us down.
LOL at this...

I read the letter... Disagreement with the President on a few certain things does not mean his letter was intended to be a wake up call to America... Maybe, just maybe they disagreed...

The funniesr part of this whole thing is you libs... You hated the Mattis appointment. He was too tough, too barbaric... We needed to stay on Obama's failing Middle East apology tour...it was gonna militarize the govt... It was the beginning of WWIII...ETC ETC ETC BLAH BLAH BLAH... now, all of a sudden, you're a big fan.. .What gives?

He is a great business man. That’s why he is so great at evaluating talent when hiring people.

Republicans are eyeing the 2020 ticket. Trump won’t be president in 2020. I think that’s why Nikki Haley jumped.

Regardless of your view of the Russian investigation. People are being convicted all around Trump. He won’t make it much longer. Republicans would want the same if it was a democrat.

Obama's mess in the Middle East??? Think again!!! You Trumpsters have certainly gotten a whole lot of practice honing your excuse and rationalizing abilities.
Mattis virtually reversed course on everything Obama was doing in the Middle East... To not know that is the epitome of what "head in the sand" means...

But I am confused... Didn't you libs hate the Mattis appointment? And now you're loving him?? But to love him would be an admission that you were wrong all along b/c he scrapped the failing Obama policies & introduced real strategies that worked... I just don't think libs know where they stand on anything anymore...

He won't be President either... Oh wait...

Keep listening to CNN & MSNBC my friend...

I felt he and McMaster were Trump's strongest appointees. They held the necessary experience for their positions and they were analytical "thinkers" who relied on fact rather than gut instinct.

I don't remember any big opposition to Mattis. I think he was confirmed by a huge majority. Why is it so hard for Republicans to admit that the President has some real issues? You can like some of what he has done while admitting that he has made some real head scratching decisions. By most accounts, including his own, he would far rather trust his gut than his experts or do any actual study or homework.

He loves to bitch about the Fed rate hikes. It's like he doesn't realize that he appointed the chairman who has done exactly what he said he would do. I literally look around me on shock that none of his supporters seem to question this stuff.

Civil discussion with Trump supporters is an oxymoron. They have been so corrupted by Fox News that they have this distorted concept of what being liberal is and therefore get to marginalize it as all bad. Rational people can look at Trump’s behavior and see the chaos, they see a man defending the republic. It’s been great theater, but the Mattis resignation illustrates just how sick Trump is. Good times for America and the world.

I don’t listen to either. If anything I lean libertarian and dislike trump for all his liberal policies. You’re a conservative that ignores all Trump’s liberal policies.

So these people trump employeed are being framed? Show me the Fox News article that agrees with you.

Republicans are pro tariffs and anti Middle East, and cool with increasing the national debt. When you bring those points up they say you’re a socialist lol.

Did you read his resignation letter? Do you know anything about General Mattis? That is not why he resigned. He resigned in protest to the reckless policies of this president. This is serious stuff.

General Mattis was the most qualified, honorable and patriotic member of Trump's cabinet serving in the most important position. The fact that he found this President's policies untenable and reckless, to the point he had to resign in protest, and stated as such in his resignation letter, should raise everyone's eyebrows.

This is a scary and very serious time. When a president makes policy decisions after speaking to Ertowan, a ruthless dictator who wants to wipe out the most loyal fighting allies we had in Iraq and Syria, without even so much as consulting his national security team it is cause for major concern. When the desires of Ertowan and Putin carry more weight with our President than one of our most decorated and loyal military leaders our nation has, it is a sad and frightening day.

This isnt about political allegiances anymore. It's not about Republican or Democrat. This is about America. Its serious and people need to make their voices heard. This is different. This is a very perilous time in our nation's history.

It wasn't long ago u saw terrorist attacks every day on TV, ISIS taking large amounts of land in the middle east, running around in our trucks and cutting heads off. That has stopped. I'd say overall, foreign policy is MUCH better. North Korea was firing off missiles left and right. That has stopped. I don't buy the sky is falling. Stop letting the media tell you how to think.
