There is no explanation other than covering their tracks. They might throw in another pardon or two for nonconsequential people like Liz Cheney just so its not quite as obvious on who they are most concerned about opening their mouth in future investigations. The excuse will be, we're trying to protect these people from the irrational wrath of DJT which is beyond silly. However, many of the sheep will not be able to see through their smokescreen.

Probably because Trump has openly talked about pursuing criminal charges against his political foes - including military tribunals. He has also named appointments who have openly declared that Democrats should be considered enemies of the state and be prosecuted as such.
Where you been? You haven't heard the "Trumps gonna weaponize the DOJ" setup?

I defer to the new elected government to make decisions on charging people who committed crimes not based on names but on the crimes
