And the Gamecock Club brought in $30.3 million. When I was a student (class of '76) IPTAY brought in considerably more than the Gamecock Club and we were about at the top nationally in giving. What has happened? Our enrollment was about 10k total then, and SC was close to 20K. At 20k we are actually closer to their enrollment percentage wise now.
My theory is this: Athletic donors are by and large male. And due to our heritage as an all male school until 1957, and predominately male until the 1980s, Clemson actually had more male alumni than SC into the 80s. And longer than that for older big donors. We had far more male students than they did at many points in our history. That is changed forever. While we are a rarity by still having males outnumber females, it is slight. And SC's athletically savvy and donating alumni now greatly outnumber ours. And becoming so academically selective has brought a different, Georgia Tech type student, who is less of an athletic booster. Just a theory.
SO WE HAVE TO PONY UP!
