Is the Republican Party facing a split like the Southern Baptists in the 80's

Bear with me as I make this comparison..

I am a graduate of Anderson College and was born and raised a Baptist and am a third generation Preachers Kid. One of the most interesting books was "Not Silent People". This book outlined historical issues that happened in the denomination. One if the most fascinating was the takeover of the Southern Baptist denomination by the Assembly of God pastors. Who were claiming to be "Fundamentalists". The only problem was the fundamentals they were espousing weren't traditional Baptist fundamentals. This lead to a big change in the political leanings and social statements of the denomination.

It struck me how similar this is to what is currently happening in the Republican Party. The Donald Trump wing is claiming to be conservative, but they are largely ignoring traditional Republican ideas such as smaller government, fiscal responsibility, etc and replacing it with social issues, nationalism, etc.

I know that this is long, but I'd be curious the thoughts of some traditional republicans such as @scotchtiger

Definitely a shift. Trump needs to go away so the adults can draft a modern Republican platform that will appeal to newly expanded elements of its base while bringing back those in the middle, higher earners, suburbia, etc.

He installed loyalists at every level. It's not going to be easy.

There is not one fact in that article that suggests the election was stolen. The fact is you can look at every state and confirm that Trump ran more poorly than other republican candidates in that state. That is the reason he lost. There were many republicans in the suburbs who detested the man and would not vote for him. Most of my friends are traditional republicans and none of them voted for Trump. People were tired of his lies, his poor me pleas, his tweets, his porn star wife, his family who looked like they just walked off the set of the "living dead". They were tired of the way he treated our allies, our intelligence services, Putin, lil Kim and the like. It has been so uplifting since the inauguration and get up to find that our President didn't start a sh*tstorm tweet fight with someone overnight. Republicans need to realize that Trump will never hold office again. He won 1 election against a very poor candidate, after the head of the FBI announced 10 days before the election that she was under investigation. Since then, all he has done is lose.

Americans are puzzled by Republican Party’s actions over the past few years. Which is it? Is the RNC lost and totally overplayed with no idea of how to respond to the ‘Iron Pentagon’ or the ‘cabal of corruption’, or is the GOP a key player in this cabal?

The Republican Party is not "facing" a split. The split has already taken place. DT, a populist outsider split away from the traditional Republican Party and was elected to one term. He then lost his reelection campaign to a weak Democrat from a small state who barely campaigned but won the office. DT, the populist outsider also cost the Republican Party control of Congress.

The question not yet answered is for how long has the populist handed the left control of the federal government.
