Well, to me that’s the million dollar question. I don’t have a great answer, just my opinion. I am aligned with what most European countries do. I have no issue with first trimester abortions and would make additional accommodations for medical issues / rape / incest. But the “my body my choice” sounds odd to me because at some point (the issue at hand), there are two “bodies” and that can’t be ignored.

Let’s start with the conception mindset. Are the DNA of the eggs and sperm not the building blocks of life? What protections do you want assigned to those prior to conception? Once conception has happened and the fetus is one cell with its complete DNA, how is it different than a cell in a skin flake, dandruff, or hair folicle. DNA material alone isn’t a baby to me. That cell needs to become an actual system with the ability to live. 20% of pregnancies suffer from miscarriages (sadly…). Should we send the moms to prison for killing a “baby” when they have a miscarriage ? Not every clump of cell has the potential to become a baby. And a clump of cells without a brain, heart, lungs, etc can only considered a baby by projection, which is done by certain religions, but not all.

I read a few months back 60% of Americans are in favor of first trimester abortions. To them, it’s not a baby at that stage. Support falls off a cliff after that. That’s kinda my stance and that of most European countries. The “always / anytime “ doesn’t make sense to me. At some point, there are two persons involved and you can’t just arbitrarily kill the other one. A woman killing her baby one minute after birth would go to prison. Not sure why killing the baby one minute before birth should be different. Again, I don’t really have an argument, it’s just based on a gut feeling for lack of a better word.

These red states that have passed rigid abortion laws have insisted that doctors have to show (and in some cases the government has to come in and agree) that there is no way the fetus could survive in order to save the life of the mother. Therefore, you have doctors hesitating to make these decisions due to the threat of potential jail time. The government is literally inserting themselves into the process.

You also frequently make the claim that proposed republican ban on abortion is "in line" with the developed world. FALSE. Those other countries that you keep referencing have much broader exceptions for incest, rape and health of the mother. Therefore, much less fear for doctors who need to make quick decisions.

I said most people. I don’t know what some of these states are doing. Most reasonable people believe the doctor should make the call and most reasonable people don’t want healthy 24 week babies killed arbitrarily.

My comment regarding the rest of the world was specific to that last point. Most cap abortions at 15 weeks or less.

Somebody please propose a bill that protects health/rape/incest and then adds a cap on arbitrary abortions at a reasonable time. For the love of God. That’s where most people are. It’s not that complicated.
