First of all I have a great deal of insight treating and teaching how to treat those age 0-100+. And I am offering free perspective. This is a great coach with some obvious narcicistic tendencies that made him even better on tv and on the field. He in some ways was an icon larger than life. If there is fault on his part it is offering false hope to staff, recruits, fans and players that he would continue coaching four more years. I believe he was asked to continue this season and more. I think part of him thought he could do it and it was that same spirit that made him great. Part of him was just being compliant and trying to please. At his age his milestones are generativity vs stagnation. In other words produc, pass on legacy or give up. My father is 70 years old and the most brilliant man I know with all of his faculties etc. This is a man who was the first person in his family to go to college and got a full ride at an Ivy League school and is in excellent mental and physical health. I asked my father if he had the energy or ability to put in the hours thinking, configuring and fixing this problem at USC this year and he said no without hesitation and wondered why someone his age would try. Spurrier simply bit off more than he could chew this year and instead of driving himself to an early grave, he moved on like most people his age do. He turned out to be normal after all.
