I am still seeing a bunch of dumping on the defense, so lets see what actually happened in Venables tenure and what offenses were present during his tenure versus what is going on this year.

2013: Defense: 288 pts given up by the Defense total (I am not separating turnovers from the O that put points up, just going by listed numbers). Averaging 22.15 points per game.
Gave up 30+ points on 5 occasions including 51 to FSU at home. Gave up over 30 to Georgia, FSU, Georgia Tech, South Carolina, and Ohio St.
Offense: Totaled 522 total points averaging 40.15 points per game. The team finished 11-2 in 13 games.

2014:
Defense: Gave up only 217 points, the strongest defensive year. Gave up 30+ only twice with Georgia and North Carolina being the two that managed it. Georgia Tech scored 28. Averaged 16.7 points per game.
Offense: Scored a total of 401 pts averaging 30.85 points per game.

2015: Defense: Gave up 325 total points in 15 games, averaging 21.67 points per game. Opponents scored more than 30 points on four occasions, including NC St., North Carolina, South Carolina, and Alabama in the NC.
Offense: 577 total points in 15 games, averaging 38.47 a game. We went 14-1 in 15 games.

2016: Defense: Gave up 270 points in 15 games, averaging 18 points a game (excellent year). Opponents scored more than 30 points five times, to Louisville, Florida St., Pitt, Virginia Tech, and Alabama.
Offense: Scored 588 points in 15 games, averaging 39.2 points per game. We finished 14-1 on the year, winning the NC.

2017:
Defense: Gave up 190 points in 14 games. Wow! Averaging 13.58 points per game. Unbelievable, yet we didn't go undefeated, how? Gave up 27 to Syracuse for which we only put up 24. Gave up 24 to Alabama and only offered 6. Doesn't matter if you defense is truly great when your offense can't score. Only gave up 30 or more points once, and that was to NC St., but one that game because we scored 38.
Offense: Scored 466 points in 14 games, averaging 33.28 points per game. We finished 12-2 on the year with our unquestionably great defensive unit.

2018:
Defense: Gave up 197 points in 15 games. Wow! Averaging 13.13 points per game. Unbelievable again. We go undefeated this year and win the NC. We only gave up more than 30 once, and that was to South Carolina, but we scored 56.
Offense: Scored 664 points in 15 games. Wow! Averaging 44.27 points per game. One of the greatest teams of all time and the first to achieve a 15-0 record. Dominate O and D this year. Texas A&M was the closest to winning, and no one else really got close to victory over this juggernaut of a team.

2019: Defense: Gave up 203 points in 15 games, another stellar performance. Averaging 13.53 points per game. Only gave up 30+ points in the NC to LSU, one of the most prolific offenses in history, giving up 42, we could only put up 25.
Offense: Put up 659 points in 15 games, averaging 43.93 points per game. This really shows you how good T. Lawrence really was. The stats his offenses put up are ridiculous, but this season still not good enough to win it all. We went 14-1 this year.

2020:
Defense: Gave up 242 points over 12 games (COVID YEAR), averaging 20.16 points per game. We gave up 30+ points in two games, giving up 47 to Notre Dame, though we scored 40 ourselves, and 49 to Ohio St., we could only offer 28.
Offense: Scored 522 points in 12 games, averaging 43.5 points per game. We finished 10-2 this year.

2021:
Defense: Venables last year. Gave up 193 points in 13 games, averaging 14.85 points per game. Another killer year for the Defense. Didn't give up a game of 30+ points, I believe this was the only time this was achieved.
Offense: Scored 342 points in 13 games, averaging 26.3 points per game. We finished 10-3, with that amazing defense. Including holding Georgia to just 10 points at their place, but we could only score 3.

2022: Defense: First year under Goodwin. Gave up 292 points in 14 games, averaging, 20.86 points per game. We gave up 30+ points four times including Wake Forest, Notre Dame, South Carolina, and Tennessee in the bowl game.
Offense: Scored 465 points in 14 games, averaging 33.21 points per game. We were improved from the year before, but still the third lowest total with 2021 and 2014 being lower. We finished 11-3 this year.

2023 (so-far):
Defense: We have given up 144 points in seven games, averaging 20.57 points per game. We have given up 30+ points once, an overtime loss to Florida St. If I were to take out the three tunovers that went directly for TDs, not to mention the various times the opponent has gotten the ball to start deep within our territory, we are averaging 17.57 points per game.
Offense: Has scored 213 over seven games, averaging 30.4 points per game. Against power five schools we are at 19.8 points per game. Wow. This offense is the worst offense to be produced since before 2013. Worse the the DJ lead offenses.

Even if we keep the pick-sixes and fumble returns for touchdowns in the defenses stat column. Those numbers should not leave you at a 4-3 record and isn't terrible. If you take out the turnovers for a direct six points, then it is an excellent year. I don't know how many times I have to say this, but the offense is tragic, and when you are a defense that isn't getting hardly any help, in the modern era of football, your results are going to be bad. Dabo can say the defense didn't finish and they the offense only had the ball for 1:20 minutes in the fourth quarter, but the offense had the ball twice in the fourth and went three and out both times. Couldn't get one first down. With offenses of the past, we win this game. Hell, we might even win this game with last year DJ according to the numbers. The offense has to get fixed. Venables is/was a defensive genius, but our defense is a very good defense, especially if the offense doesn't deliver the ball to the opposing team. This is the worst Clemson offense for a very long time and even a very good defense will not be enough to win with an offense this bad.
