Monday P.M. Kayden McDonald Update
By: Paul Strelow
An update on Suwanee (Ga.) North Gwinnett four-star defensive tackle Kayden McDonald, who announces his decision during a 6 p.m. spot on a Georgia local news telecast.
McDonald (6-2, 325), ranked No. 193 overall, has Clemson, Ohio State, Florida, Michigan and Oklahoma as his finalists.
We've reiterated over recent weeks that McDonald has made most of his suitors feel like they'll be the choice.
Only Florida had reached the conclusion it was out, and thus its move toward flipping UCF defensive tackle John Walker.
As we wrote this morning, we considered Ohio State's confidence worth underlining -- especially with the manner by which the Buckeyes pulled the rug from under Clemson with another North Gwinnett prospect, 2021 four-star corner Jordan Hancock.
We also noted that McDonald and his family had spoken with various Clemson coaches and contact points through the weekend.
While our indications are that McDonald has not informed Clemson of his decision, we would tell you that as of late this morning, the Tigers are not expecting to be the selection based on their evidence and returns.
The belief is that it would be Ohio State or Oklahoma.
This is an opportune time to reiterate that Clemson owns defensive tackle commitments from Alabaster (Ala.) Thompson four-star Peter Woods, Warner Robins (Ga.) four-star Vic Burley and Rome (Ga.) four-star Stephiylan Green -- a haul that may well rank as the nation's best at the position this cycle, and certainly one of value and need should the Tigers presumably lose several of their standout veterans to the NFL Draft.
McDonald was considered an oversign for the position. Per our intel, Clemson won't intentionally go looking for another in order to fill a quota.
Should the Tigers not add another in this cycle, they will turn their attention to landing multiple targets for the 2024 defensive tackle class, headlined by their chase for Atlanta (Ga.) Pace Academy four-star Hevin Brown-Shuler.
