CHARLOTTE, N.C. –- Chesapeake (Va.) Indian River four-star safety Devon Hunter broke into a wide smile and delivered an “All-in” when he realized a reporter was about to ask him questions about Clemson before Sunday’s Rivals Camp Series competition.

“That’s the one school I’ve been a fan of since I was a little,” Hunter said subsequently. “Being a fan of the Tigers, having an opportunity to play college football for them, that’s a blessing for me.”

Hunter (6-1, 205), ranked No. 42 nationally overall regardless of position by Rivals.com, continues to slowly survey the field in his recruitment.

Chesapeake's Devon Hunter is billed by Rivals.com as the No. 2 prospect in the state of Virginia and second nationally among safeties.

He visited Florida last month and was supposed to travel to Clemson for its spring game less than two weeks ago.

“But I had some school work I needed to get done and my mom didn’t let me go,” Hunter said. “I was hurt I didn’t get to come see my boys play. But I’ll be back down, trust me. They’re still high on my list.”

Hunter took in Clemson’s elite junior day in late January and has been a leading target for defensive coordinator Brent Venables, his area recruiter.

“He’s telling me I have the opportunity in my hands,” Hunter said. “It’s up to me whether I want to take it and run with it or drop it and leave it. Right now, I just want to take it and run with it because Clemson is Clemson. I’ve been liking them since I was little.

“Hearing from all their great coaches and knowing they put guys in the league – T.J. Green, I look up to him a lot. I kind of see my playing style like him as a guy who can come downhill and make a tackle.”

Virginia Tech might pose the most significant challenge, as Hunter is slated to return to Blacksburg for its spring game Saturday.

“It’s like home,” he said. “It’s away from home, but it’s still home. A lot of people from my hometown play for them. They’ve been recruiting me since middle school, so that’s an honor. Knowing they’ve been on my side for that long means a lot.”

Hunter said he wants to whittle his options to a top 10 before his senior season, then make a decision down the line.

Clemson will be among the top candidates till the end.

“Clemson has been my favorite school since I was young,” Hunter said. “I played video games with Clemson and have been watching Tajh Boyd and Sammy Watkins go at it. They’re just fun.”
