CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The most familiar recruit to Clemson’s program is getting ready to branch out and do his diligence this summer.

Central (S.C.) Daniel linebacker Jake Venables plans to compete at more than a half-dozen college camps to get to know other coaching staffs and experience their campuses.

D.W. Daniel's Jake Venables already has several major college options.

“I’m just going to kind of wait and keep going on visits and to camps,” he said. “I don’t know about a decision. That will probably come close to my senior year.”

Venables (6-1, 202), the son of Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables, was a regular on the Tigers’ sideline last season.

He holds additional offers from SMU and Texas Tech and attended North Carolina’s spring game earlier this month.

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney issued an offer to Venables last summer at camp.

“They talk to me about recruiting, but not a whole lot,” Jake said. “It’s mainly my dad, but coach Swinney does too. He might say something about if I would have been out there, that would have been my play. Or that they could use me in certain situations.”

Venables said Oklahoma will get his first camp stop this summer, followed by SMU and former Tigers offensive coordinator Chad Morris.

He will then return to Clemson's camp before making a swing through UNC, N.C. State and Wake Forest.

Venables might also compete at Baylor’s camp.

Having grown up in that region while his father worked at Oklahoma, Venables said he has interest in exploring his options in the Oklahoma and Texas area.

“It’s kind of hard because I have one place pulling me one way and another pulling me the other way,” he said. “I guess we’ll just see how it goes.”
