After a year of the China Virus and the mayhem it caused across the globe we now have a better picture of just how deadly the coronavirus was compared to other great pandemics in the past.
And, it’s not even close.

The Visual Capitalist also put together a visual last year on the history of pandemics.
According to the number of global deaths at that time the coronavirus was one of the smallest pandemics in modern history.
Since that time the numbers have escalated for the coronavirus but still don’t compare to the great pandemics of the past.

Good morning!

So...a greater percentage of people died from pandemics at times in history when the overall population was significantly lower, and medical science (not to mention widespread communication tools) was virtually non-existent? That's not an eye-opener for me, fwiw. More like common sense.

I also noticed that they cite Wikipedia as a reference. Strong data source.

Not really surprising... Negative Pressure ventilators first appeared in the 1800s. Positive Pressure vents started showing up in the 1900s. BUT the modern version of the ICU with multiple vents didn't really become a thing until the 1940s.
Bottom line here is that anyone that got put on a ventilator during this pandemic probably would have died for sure in earlier times.
