If you think this is not the plan for the entire nation then think again. Of course we know @nytigerfan is busy celebrating this move.

New York City lawmakers passed a bill on Thursday that would give noncitizens and illegal aliens the right to vote in municipal elections.
The new measure would give 800,000 green card holders and illegal alien “DREAMers” the right to cast a ballot.
The City Council bypassed state lawmakers and passed the measure which will likely prompt a legal challenge.
Republican opponents say the city council does not have the authority to grant voting rights to illegals.

NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio has stated he will not veto this measure.
The Washington Times reported:
Noncitizens in New York City would gain the right to vote in municipal elections under a measure approved Thursday by the City Council that would give access to the ballot box to 800,000 green card holders and so-called Dreamers.
Only a potential veto from Mayor Bill de Blasio stood in the way of the measure becoming law, but the Democrat has said he would not veto it. It’s unclear whether the bill might still face legal challenges.
The Council’s vote was a historic moment for an effort that had long languished.
Councilman Francisco Moya, whose family hails from Ecuador, choked up as he spoke in support of the bill.
“This is for my beautiful mother who will be able to vote for her son,” said Moya, while joining the session by video with his immigrant mother at his side.
The measure would allow noncitizens who have been lawful permanent residents of the city for at least 30 days, as well as those authorized to work in the U.S., including so-called “Dreamers,” to help select the city’s mayor, city council members, borough presidents, comptroller and public advocate.

literally none of the people affected by this are illegal. NYC is a little different than whatever rathole you call home. Most of these people are high earning corporate workers who earn more in a month than you do in a year and they pay taxes. Why shouldn’t they get a say in the local politics of they city that they are contributing so much to?

mans why do you care? Unless you live in NYC this does not concern you.

I mostly agree with this ...

I heard about this whole thing a few weeks ago, and "too me" it mostly makes sense. Why shouldnt legal residents (green card/visa holders) not have input in local elections? I mean ... they live there? Why shouldnt they have input on municipal issues ... BUT ... what I need a little color on is what issues are we talking about? I havent really seen that, admittedly because Im not dialed nor do I really care what folks in NYC do ... and Im not going to read the GWP, because of ....well .... reasons

What raises red flags to me is will these legal non-citizens be allowed to vote on State representatives? I mean, yes these folks should have input on local issues, but Im not sure they should have input on representatives who control State wide interests. For example: State representatives draw/vote on congressional maps, and that has significant ramifications on who is sitting in Washington representing the state of NY. Just seems like an avenue for more Gerrymandering.

Gerrymandering is something Im dealing with here in Maryland. As a resident of Maryland Dis 1, the state of Maryland has submitted a new congressional map that would include certain parts of Anne Arundel county in MD Dis 1. Its a clear ploy to remove Maryland's lone Republican rep (House and Sen). Now Maryland is absolutely a blue state, through and through, but the demographics of the state does not support a 7 to 1 disparity. It should be 6 to 2.... maybe even 5 to 3.

I dont expect folks here to be familiar with Maryland politics but to have Western Maryland in the same congressional district as Montgomery County is ... partisan lunacy ...and including Anne Arundel County (specifically the region around Annapolis) in the same district as the Eastern Shore is just as egregious if not moreso.

Soooooooo .... to conclude my rambling ..... if legal residents are allowed to vote on trash pick up days or whether or not to build a new school, that is one thing. Being allowed to vote for representatives? Thats "gonna be a no from me dog."

edit: Even Kweisi MFume (MD Dis 7) agrees the State's legislature's map goes too far. Its not often I agree with Kweisi MFume

This proposed law gives them the power to vote on municipal elections, not state or federal.

I agree on gerrymandering, it is a huge issue and is done by both sides. I read the other day about the DOJ lawsuit against Texas. One of the issues is that Texas' population has grown by 4mm in the last few years, and 90% of those people are black or latino. Yet the redistricting and voting new laws give them zero increased representation.

thank you for the clarification. We are in agreement.

As far as Texas goes and all state districts go, those lines (IMO) need to be drawn with straight lines, where state borders allow. Its when curves and S lines start appearing .... that is the point where I cringe.

Just a note regarding Texas and teh DOJ lawsuit, Larry Hogan has asked Merrick Garland for Maryland to be added to the lawsuit ....*cricket* from the DOJ. If something is wrong ... it is wrong ...

It is just another incremental step toward letting non citizens vote unfettered. Don't worry about what I do or do not have punk.

Definitely an issue on both sides, and almost comically obvious. SC drew up a district for Clyburn that captures the heavy african american populations of the I95 corridor, plus reaches a carve out all the way in North Charleston (not to be confused with Charleston demographically) and even some areas of eastern Columbia I think. Like a big ole net to catch the black vote.

The people that need to fix this are the ones that benefit the most from it. Its probably the one thing they all agree on.

Side note: N Charleston will be changing a lot in the next ten years. I have some friends doing big RE investments there.

It definitely will. I have around 7-8 rental properties there. Just sold 11 others. Charleston can only grow in so many directions. Ocean to the east, Francis Marion national forest to the north, rivers and marshes breaking up much of the coastal area. Growth and redevelopment will push hard up the neck area and connect with all of the growth inland around Nexton, etc.

With that though will come a change in demographics. The folks renting from me now won’t be able to afford to live there. Rent is already about to go up in a significant way to keep pace with inflation...

The money coming here is nuts. Mt. Pleasant is becoming unaffordable for normal people. Multi-million dollar home prices are the norm. My house has probably doubled in value since we moved in 5 years ago. It’s going to push “normal” successful people to gentrify places like N. Charleston.
