"We are all certain that democracy is best when voting is open to everyone on a level playing field; the referees are neutral; and at the end of the game the final score is respected and accepted," Saban and Co. wrote, per a press release. "So we are united now in urging Congress to exercise its Constitutional responsibility to enact laws that set national standards for the conduct of Federal elections and for decisions that determine election outcomes."

Like only American citizens should vote in elections?
Like a voter should have a picture ID card in order to vote?
Like a voter should vote in person with few exceptions?
Like election official should be transparent in their process? That their results should be auditable?

how about we fix existing real issues first and then work on the made up fantasy land problems you read about on fox news and GWP?

Exactly! The slimmed down bill shouldn't be controversial at all - for anybody. Unless you fear that Grandma Moses using her utility bills as ID will destroy our democracy. Oh wait - his side doesn't care about our current system of government....

Can grandma use her utility bill to dine in a restaurant in NYC? But hell no anyway. A utility bill is not acceptable voter id imo. You care about grandma now? What about grandma sitting in the DC gulag for over a year now for getting her pic taken in the capitol?

The GA bill, which made it legal to use the utility bill you mention (or even simply recite your DOB and last 4 of your SSN) was called Jim Crow 2.0 by the president. That bill expanded voting access beyond anything seen before pandemic times. Yet, that bill is used as an example of why we need to federalize elections.

The left is so disingenuous about this.

This so much. The "Jim Crowe 2.0" revised voting laws in GA allow earlier voting and more lenient absentee voting regs than Biden's home state of Delaware. Yet somehow he and all the other illiterate/uninformed blind followers continue to cry foul and hold up GA as like it is some type of restrictive legislation when other states, notably the potus's home state, have far more restrictive voting laws. It is absolutely ludicrous that someone could object to being required to have a govt issued ID to vote, when much more restrictive identification is required for so many other things. You currently have to go to way more trouble to get vaxxed and show proof just to be able to go out to eat.

That's far from the main issue and you know it. Just a reminder that I don't have a problem with requiring a picture ID, but I also know the percentage of voters that don't have one is miniscule and not a threat to a fair election.

What I want to know is why aren't you standing up to all the people on the right doing everything they can to subvert our elections? If you care about democracy your blood should be boiling that red and purple states are blatantly trying to install Big Lie candidates on every school board, every state and municipal election with an eye on supplanting every Secretary of State with Trumpist candidates. All because they are enraged about something that DIDN'T HAPPEN.

Why aren't you decrying their attempts to empower partisans to literally overturn election outcomes?
Why aren't you squawking about turning over the machinery of elections or the vote counting process to partisan legislators and other partisan actors?
Why aren't you screaming about the threats to our election officials for simply doing their jobs? These people are getting continually harassed, including death threats because they did the RIGHT THING.
Why aren't you standing up to the GOP assholes gerrymandering the hell out of purple states to give themselves huge advantages? North Carolina, a state divided almost evenly between Democrats and Republicans just got carved up to give the GOP 10 of the 14 House seats.

Because even though you play the part of the rational Republican on here, we all know when you get to that ballot box you'll pull that lever for the Big Lie candidate, simply because he has an R beside his name.

And that's why we have to keep fighting because your side is literally attempting to take what voters won't give them and they're doing it in broad ****ing daylight.

But yea, that disabled lady out in the country is the real threat to our democracy....

And I think all of them are dumb asses if they agree with HR1.

Give me a specific statue of a state election law that has been passed that you object to. I don't mean the statute number, just the law/requirement itself. Not some generalization bull crap you heard on cnn. What state and what specific requirement that has been passed do you object to.
Also, if you don't think Dems are gerrymandering in blue states you are delusional.

Here you go.

Of particular note to me are states passing laws that restrict access to mail in voting. Those decisions are being made not based on fact but disinformation and fear. Mail in balloting is secure and easy. It increases participation in nearly every demo and in a nonpartisan way. And there's absolutely no evidence whatsoever that it's easy to commit fraud or that it happens in any meaningful way.

Additionally, states passing laws making it harder to return abesntee or mail in ballots by restricting the number or location of drop boxes is wrong.

Finally, why the pushback on early in person voting? Voting should be easily accessible for all.

Under no circumstance is mass mail in voting acceptable unless it is accompanied by heightened stringent verification and we know dems will not go for that. Under no circumstances should drop boxes be allowed. Dems want universal mail in voting with no verification and unmonitored drop boxes on every corner. What a joke.

Drop boxes should be monitored 24/7 with video surveillance and in Colorado, all are. Signature verification is a perfectly normal process that ensures the identity of each voter, first a system matches it against the signature on file. If it doesn't match a bipartisan team of election judges reviews the signature. Every state with mail in balloting already does this.

here is another example of voter suppression in GA.

I'm not standing up to anyone because I barely pay attention to this stuff. I don't read anything from Fox or CNN or about the "big lie." And I work a shitload, am raising 2 boys and travel.

The legislative changes are the one valid issue I see. Perhaps, if the race-baiting morons on your side focused on that instead of lying about voter ID or drinking water in GA, they could have actually found a logical position that the majority could agree on. Instead, they lied, they talked about Jim Crow 2.0 and now nobody trusts them - even if there is a valid issue underneath the pile of garbage they have focused on.

The only bill I have paid attention to is the GA bill. It makes it legal for everyone to vote by mail without justification. I believe you simply have to request a ballot.

That's actually probably a left of center approach. Most on the right probably want to limit it more. I don't really care. A reasonable approach should be to prove who you are, request a certified ballot, complete the ballot and either mail it in or drop it off to a secure location. I don't think we should mass-mail ballots or allow people to print them out themselves. And I believe that is what the GA bill does.

Would you agree that approach is completely logical and the GA bill got it right?

As far as drop box restrictions, can't you, um, mail a mail-in ballot?

Exactly and that’s why I love this guy. Nothing Comes before Winning and anything comes before Recruiting. He would never put his thoughts or feelings before winning.

There does need to be restrictions on the mail in process. There are bad actors on both sides that would take advantage of an unrestricted system. Voting should be fair and effortless. In all fair voting systems the rules are clear as they should be. Never should any side have an advantage. I personally believe the only way to fix the voting issue is to decentralize the entire process.

You're kidding right? Trump's unqualified mega-donor that he appointed to Postmaster General just in time to slow the mail down before the election?

Seems like a bad appointment.

Easy fix: Have your mail-in ballot post-marked X business days before election day. It will be counted regardless of date of arrival.

Or, vote in person during ample early voting times (as memorialized in the GA bill) or on election day

There are very simple solutions to all of these problems you guys wax on about.

the real question here is how could appointing someone who is in no way qualified for a position backfire? if trump runs things like this in his businesses i have no idea why they kept failing

It's wild how the corruption runs so deep and so wide and you're completely oblivious to it, but when someone says summin summin bout Jim Crow summin summin you are outraged! 😅

I'm not outraged. I think it's all ridiculously stupid and an absurd waste of our resources. I also think it's shameful that the last 2 president's have used reckless rhetoric to divide the country.

Still trying to figure out Schumer's strategy here:
  • Clear stigma of legislative failure after BBB was reduced, then killed
  • Bringing federal election bill to the floor that will surely be killed
  • Forcing purple state senators to vote on a change to the filibuster, which is unpopular in most states, and has been opposed in the past even by Biden and Schumer
  • Likely losing that vote as well, making it a really bad, really public losing streak while Biden enjoys a ~40% approval rating

What's the strategy here @iceheart08 ?

He has to do this for the base. Same reason they proposed/instituted multiple EOs that were obviously not gonna pass constitutional muster. Congress won't act, needs to keep base engaged.
