No. 8 Gamecocks Fall 2-1 at No. 23 Clemson
  • CLEMSON, S.C. -- Eighth ranked South Carolina fell 2-1 to 23rd ranked Clemson on Friday night at Riggs Field in women's soccer action. The Gamecocks are now 2-1-0 on the year, while the win lifted the Tigers to 2-0 for the season.

    The Gamecocks took an early 1-0 lead on a goal from sophomore forward Savannah McCaskill in the ninth minute. Sophie Groff was credited with an assist on the goal.

    Clemson was quick to respond as a goal from Shannon Horgan in the 14th minute tied the match at 1-1. Catrina Atanda scored the game-winner for the Tigers in the 16th minute.

    Freshman Carrie Lawrence and senior Stevi Parker both put a shot on target in the first half but were unable to find the net.

    Neither team generated many scoring opportunities in the second half as both the Gamecocks and Tigers took only four shots apiece.

    Senior goalkeeper Caroline Kelly played all 90 minutes. She allowed two goals and recorded a save.

    GAME CHANGER

    Catrina Atanda's goal in the 16th minute gave the Tigers the 2-1 advantage.

    KEY STATOf the Gamecocks' 14 shots only three were on goal.
