In honor of the 80th anniversary of D-Day, what’s everyone’s top 5 (or so) favorite war and/or military movies?
For me Patton is the undisputed #1. An amazing character study and I just don’t think any other war movie has been able to tell the story of war from such a unique perspective.
My #2 would be Saving Private Ryan. Perhaps the most powerful opening scene in film history, even though I’ve seen it 100 times it still jars me every time.
After those it gets a little muddled, but I’ll list Full Metal Jacket, The Deer Hunter, and Glory as the rest of my top 5.
Honorable mention to Rambo, which isn’t really a “war movie” but, like Deer Hunter, touches so succinctly on the post-war hardships faced by veterans and the horrors of PTSD.
