SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) -- A message making the rounds on Facebook that groups are threatening to attack schools on 9/11 are not credible, school officials in Berkeley and Dorchester counties say.
Berkeley County Schools and Dorchester District 2 officials posted noticed on Facebook Thursday that said they were aware of the 9/11 threat and had been in touch with law enforcement. However, law enforcement told district officials there was no evidence the threat was real.
Charleston County Schools officials said they were also aware of the supposed threat.
"Those agencies have promised to keep the district informed and updated if anything changes," Berkeley County's message reads.
Officials said administrators and resource officers at schools in the tri-county would remain vigilant throughout the day, as they are on any other day. Dorchester County officials said resource officers would be making extra patrols through the areas near schools on Friday.
The threat appears to have originated with a post from a man warning parents not to send their children to school on Sept. 11 because the Black Panther Party was going into schools to kill all the white children and teachers.
However, the post says Sept. 11 is on a Monday.
Snopes has also ruled the message as probably false.
According to Snopes, "the message echoes countless other false rumors about black gang members supposedly planning murder sprees involving the killing of innocent, randomly-selected (white) victims."
Snopes notes that some radical groups are promoting the #FYF911 hashtag on Twitter to mobilize protests to burn flags, but none of those conversations have included invading schools and colleges.
