OT: Braves get Matt Kemp..

Don't really get this trade, especially since Kemp is owed $18m over each of the next 3 seasons.
I'm reading they're gonna flip him. That being Kemp. Olivera was a woman beater and had to go thankfully Padres were dumb enough to take him lol.

Padres paying 3-5 mil of that each year. It's not ideal. But they were going to have to take something bad for a player they no longer wanted to be associated with. If they were going to get something better it wasn't going to be much better.

That's true, but the Padres are going to immediately release Olivera. Plus if he gets convicted, his deal is voided....maybe the Braves couldnt take that risk.

The Dodgers are paying part of Kemp's contract as well, I believe.

Braves are paying about five mill more a year to kemp than they would have to olivera. I'm thinking maybe kemps name will add a little excitement to a team that has very little. I'm hoping they bring McCann back and reunite him with Frenchy!

Has to goto prison. Don't know if it can be voided for a day or if he has to go for a certain amount of time.

I would also think the Braves are taking the gamble that he has a good first half next year and they flip him to a contender for talent. They've been successful so far at that in the recent months.

Summarizing a Joel Sherman tweet, the Braves see Kemp's warts but are so desperate to get rid of Olivera. They also think power will cost more in the offseason.

This is the way I see it. The Braves will keep Kemp, deal with his negatives as a trade-off for his power. And if it's a total failure, at least they got rid of Olivera.

It's not great but Kemp has 23 homer and 68 RBIs this year and a .262 BA already. He's definitely someone that can bat in the middle of the lineup with Freeman. Plus he is not part of the long term plan so why not get him while you can and get rid of someone like Olivera.

Braves only out 8 mm/year on Kemp as Dodgers and Pads still paying him also. Can't get MVP power for 8 mm on FA market. Genius move by Coppy. Kemp won't be flipped. Under contract for 4 more years. He will likely be in lineup for long haul.

Braves get a guy that will hit 30 home runs this year and still has a lot of power for 8.5 million a year. Good luck getting a player capable of doing that for 8.5 million on the free agent market I don't care that his defense sucks and he doesn't steal bases anymore the Braves need power.

There's been some weird statements in this thread about the money so let me clear that up for those who care.

Kemp owed 64.5 million over next three years. Padres sent 10.5 to Braves to offset that a lil. Braves will have to cover 18 million a year. Some mentioned we're paying him 8.5 million. Technically we're paying 18 million per year. 8.5 is the extra salary compared to what we were already paying Olivera.
