I have a Dewalt 20V Hammerdrill and the charger won't charge the battery. I have swapped out the charger and when I plug it into the wall a red light comes on briefly. This makes me think the charger is ok. I slide the battery onto the charger and nothing, no lights and no charge.

Battery has been used on a handful of occasions over the last two years, but not much. Don't have the other battery as it "walked off" at my old house.

Any ideas? Batteries are expensive as hell.

I had two batteries with my DeWalt that both went dead (red) and wouldn't really hold a charge after 7-10 years.

So no advice, haha. Just wanted to share in the frustration. Elected to get a Craftsman w/ a cord because I grew tired of the battery struggles (I don't think they even make the size battery for my drill anymore, and you're right, a replacement battery seems almost as expensive as the drill itself).

I would recommend Makita battery powered tools next time when having to purchase any. Best on the market for a long time in my opinion. I agree with Paul most likely the battery is dead.

I've had Dewalt's for years with no trouble... Look on Amazon and get a "generic" replacement battery (make sure to match your drill and charger model #)... And like the OP said, go get you a driver that uses the same battery... The lithium Ions are awesome, but they do expire after two-three years whether you use them or leave them sitting... Best to have two that you can switch out....

When you say driver, what do you mean?

Also, quit leaving your batteries in the garage. Cold weather is he11 on them.

It's like a drill, but it has an impact mechanism that you can use to drive screws... Once you use one, you will never pick up the drill again (unless you are drilling holes)... It has a lot of torque, just like an impact tool... It will drive screws all day without a sweat...

An impact driver. Very cool.

What can a drill do that an impact driver cannot?

From Lowes web site....

is there a battery refresh option?

I've had the best luck with Hilti products and their customer service is very good also.

Go to Batteries Plus. They'll replace the battery cells with new ones. Got my Dewalt cells replaced for $40 I think and it's like-new.

Came to post this. Batteries Plus is great.
I've had this problem in the past and you're just about better off starting over with the cost of two batteries unless you get them here on the cheap.

Battery specialist will rebuild them for half the cost of replacing them. They're located in Greenville.

Unless you are rich or a contractor, DeWalt is way over priced. I started using the Rigid stuff (18v) from Home Depot. Lifetime battery warranty and they have about 20 tools using the same battery.

Dewalt is over rated
Lol everyone post his personal preference. I agree that Dewalt is the John Deere of tools...buying the name more than anything. I'm a Bosch man.

If you're going to buy new, then you might want to look into the sets that have both the impact driver and the drill. The drill is more multipurpose, but an impact river will outlast a drill for driving screws etc. Still, since most come with two batteries, this is seldom an issue for me. Charge one as you use the other.

Since Ryobi took over their quality has gone way down. Been in construction for 34 years just my opinion Makita is the best on the market. Especially the new brushless feature.

Why did they test the 12v Bosch with 18v everything else? I had a PM subscription for a long time. A friend of mine used to love for me to cut out and send to him the Harbor Freight coupons. He is a contractor and I always wondered why he shopped there. He said he could buy three separate tools for the same price as a professional grade tool at lowe's etc and just chunk one when it went bad. Seems like a bad strategy.

I have a drill and impact drill 12 volt Bosch really good. That would be my 2nd pick for tools. The Tool Shed in Greenville is the best place to purchase tools in my opinion.

Stopped reading here the Makita is the only way to go. All of my cordless tools except my impact (Snap On) are older Makita and have served me very well.

I have had same problem with the same drill...2 batteries died. I contacted Dewalt and they asked for the # on the battery. It either began with 14 or had a 14 in the #. As a result, they told me to take it to their service office in Charlotte and they would replace it. I think there is a 2 year warranty on it.

I bought mine on Ebay, and had the seller replace the first one. It is a powerful drill, but useless without the batteries.

I have a Rigid Drill and Impact they both work great!

Plus they are orange... Just a plus

Update: took @muddy05tiger advice and just got the impact driver, normal cordless drill, and work light combo for $199, came with two batteries. Two batteries by themselves were going for around $130 at Lowes.

Going to sell the normal cordless drill on eBay as I already have the hammerdrill.
