The recruiting is going fine and based on my football IQ slipping due to old age I decided to comment on this school thing of virtual versus in person since I suck at Football or so most young bucks say

Like Reagan with the Air Traffic Controllers I would draw the line in the sand

All teachers will be back in the classroom come Fall or they will no longer be teachers

End of story

To qualify this statement I watched my grandkids attend EVERY day in person at a school this past year

Absent NOT a single time

My wife a teacher of 30 years says today’s teachers are wuzzies

Every older teacher we know feels the same way

Put out teaching or Get out teaching

Millions risked their health in far worse situations than teachers

Get a life , shut up and teach

Just like my company who used covid as an excuse to close multiple offices to save on overhead, I sense a similar pattern amongst teachers (not all of them) who claim they don’t “feel safe” returning to schools yet find a way to go grocery shopping, fly in planes, etc.

Not sure what state you live in, but here in MA the teachers unions spend about 95% of their time & energy on salary/severance negotiations, and the rest of their time complaining about their current contract (so it comes as no surprise they are using covid as leverage without any regard for the students).

Why wouldn't they go back? Because of covid? They just about all got the vaccine... at least around here.

Our district in Fort Mill had to close a few times because too many teachers were sick and there were not enough people to even legally cover the amount of student (50% were face to face)

Tough work for wizzies that make $14 per hour with advanced degrees vs just working the fry line at Arby’s

Tons of teachers quit this year, your wife looking to come back out of retirement and back up your call to action

I'm all for higher pay for teachers, my wife is a teacher. However, that stat on teacher pay is just flat out wrong. I don't know the exact number, but I think minimum first year teacher pay in SC is ~ $35K. I can't imagine where/how they got that number.

We already have a shortage, don’t pay nearly enough, and underfund them to extremes. Now tell them you don’t need them. That’ll show them who’s boss! 😂

The minimum starting salary in sc for a bachelors degree is 35k. York county districts are 40k....

The $14 per hour for "advanced" degrees you claim is 35% lower than reality in Fort Mill for a basic bacherlors degree.

There are several actual advanced degree levels above bachelors that pay even more starting.

Just quoting zip recruiter, not my number

But sure, $40k and can not fill the need, but let’s fire them and see what happens

Honestly, if you didn't know that number was bs(particularly for those with advanced degrees), then you don't know enough to have an informed opinion.
I have no problem firing most teachers that refuse to come back. Of course there should be common sense exceptions. If you can't take the vaccine for some reason, have a severe auto immune disease, cancer/chemo, etc - obviously those are exceptional circumstances. However, for the vast majority of people, the vaccine provides protection. There is no justifiable reason why almost every teacher should not be back at school teaching in person.

My wife taught. One thing that is always missed is the hourly rate includes summers off and every holiday under the sun and then some. Gotta include those benefits in the $/hr part. But I’d agree they still don’t make enough.

with that low 13k number, looks like they were including teacher assistants.

It’s not taking into account summers off and all the holidays. That’s why it’s so low.

but also, the # of hours they put in "after hours", at the school & home. My wife probably averages an extra 8-10 hrs a week that she's not "paid" for, so to speak.

They listed a gross(yearly) salary, not just per hour. The gross salary has nothing to do with summers/holidays.

Agreed. My wife probably averages 55+ hrs/wk. She is usually there by 7:15 and rarely leaves before 5. Usually works at least another hour when home and several hours over the weekend. She is actually painting small wooden chairs with scenes to represent the four seasons(of the year) to use in her class right now.

Yes. Fire them all. Let's find a better alternative to public education which is a failure.

There are lots of great teachers and I have had many in my life that has really impacted me in a positive way

Teachers that are impactful are in short supply and deserve more money and more support from the state and the parents of the children

God bless those wonderful folks molding the minds

it’s the people that abuse the system as I have heard so many students complain about the abuse of students using the remote learning

My family and grandchildren will be doing all in person if I have to hire personal tutors for them

Those who accept the farce of remote learning now put on our children are really abusing the children and their education

SC teachers make a heck of a lot more than $29K a year. My wife's rate is closer to $60K....and they only work 9 months a year.

Same with my ex wife. She doesn't work 40 hours a week year round, but she puts in the equivalent of 40+ hours per week every year. Anyone who says teachers are only in it for the summers off, is someone whose opinion on the issue doesn't deserve to be heard.

I'm going to agree with you.

1. Online classrooms are a joke. All teachers area doing is handing out homework assignments and having the kids self learn.
2. I fully support the decision of any teacher that does not want to return to school.
3. I fully support the school district that elects to terminate their contract for not returning.
4. There are a lot of good, caring school teachers out there that deserve more money.
5. There are a lot of very bad, lazy school teachers out there as well.
6. Under the age of 50 COVID deaths = 24,970 Only 4.4% of all COVID deaths in the US. Almost all had some underlying condition. (CDC Data)

We aren't there yet but I think we are getting to a point where teachers will have to be told "return to the classroom now or don't bother coming back at all."

And I suspect 95% at least will come back. At least.

There will be some cases where a teacher or support staff will still need to be out due to health issues making them high risk. But that may never go away.

Where I do see a major shift is in work from home vs working from an office. A growing company can save a shvtload of capital by not having offices for every person. Some roles will have to be on site, but many won't.

But that's a different deal.

Hah, $35k must be nice. I got $30k for my first year teaching in SC in 2013-14. Plus a $1,200 stipend for being asst varsity soccer coach. It was a pittance for the sheer number of hours that I put in (more than I do for my current job in IT) and is a significant reason why so many SC public school teachers have left the profession in recent years. I would gladly pay higher county/state taxes if I knew it would go towards increasing teacher compensation.

What until we fire them all per this post, you will be able to ask for double

I am willing to bet very few SC teachers refuse to go back in a class room. Most teachers in SC are already teaching live/face to face classes, so your post is a bit on the ridiculous side. This is more of a problem in other states, not SC.

Exactly, I did not know that there were any teachers not back at work in SC. In Fort Mill, they were told either come back or work for the virtual school. If they go to the virtual school they had to do it from the school building and they would not be able to guarantee their spot at the previous school come next year.

I am not so sure teachers are the ones getting a free ride that they are made out to be.
