Little slow lately in the sports world so I've been catching up on my reading. I've been rereading some of my stuff on the Mongols and damn were these dudes insane. The armies that Ghengis Khan and his son Ogedei took west on their conquests were like something out of a sci-fi movie compared to what the Enlightened World and the Middle East had seen previously.
I think you could make the argument that, relative to other armies at the time, the Mongols are the most historically dominant army of all-time. It's tough having anything top the current US army, but the Mongols army was incredible. They had a scouting and intelligence service that has been ranked as the top of its kind ever. They attacked in choreographed, intricate waves with multiple fronts and battle lines using many of the same principles commonly adopted today. They pulled the fainted retreat only to lie away in ambush more times than Rommel did in Africa.
Any other folks got some armies, leaders and/or eras they really love?
