Go Capitalism!

giphy.gif

Capitalism is good- wish we had a government that actually let it work by getting out of the way. One side uses direct taxation; the other is now using indirect taxation (tariffs) to screw it up. Pox on both their houses.

Government Jobs and Unemployment data are pretty much propaganda both parties use to con the public.

It has been near worthless since the early 1990's when they changed the 'headline' data to U3 from U6. Jobs surveys are a minimal sample surveys (the reason that they are constantly revised in future months) and unemployment only looks at those eligible for U/E insurance that are actively seeking a job. The only purpose for U3 is as a performance measure for unemployment office processing levels.

Our Labor Force participation rates (63%) (share of people actually working) are still lower than they have been in over 30 years (since women really entered the workforce in mass)and not really improving. It is essentially unchanged since 2014. LF participation is a measure of how much of the workforce is actually carrying the nation; like tax base - broader participation is desirable.

Maybe the news this week that Trump is cutting down on free food for able bodied people without dependents will help boost the labor participation rate?

I appreciate that you are a fan of the man. I despise all politicians, so do not get caught up in defending the indefensible. I can appreciate some things he has talked about - most of his successes, other than judicial, have been executive orders easily changed by the next clown. I also hate some of what he has done. I'll ignore the character issues.

I'm all for whatever it takes to motivate people to go to work. We have entirely too many on 'disability' (whose only disability is a lack of desire). Too many in this country have never served it or paid taxes to support it. Lot of free riders and not all are on welfare/public aid.

Hate that he lead a charge to increase the standard deduction, effectively increasing the portion of the population not paying income taxes. He should have sought to broaden the base and lower the tax rates. Could have provided a similar net savings for those that are still paying taxes. More folks would have skin in the game if they had to pay something. By increasing the number of free riders, this tax reform package did more long term damage than anything the Dems could have done. The more free riders that exist, the greater the probability that those still paying taxes will get stuck paying exorbitant rates in the future because when more money is DEMANDED from the citizenry, those not paying will inevitably not be asked to start. Taxes stay lower when every voter has to pay them.

Wish he would drop his silly indirect taxation war on the US consumer (sorry tariff) that is slowing what should be a real booming export economy. Either that, or go all in. Incrementalism in any war, and we are in a trade war, is a fool's errand. In to win, or stay out.

Hate his war on the Fed, that is essentially getting the Fed to create a money bubble to hide bad fiscal and trade policies. This is an indirect tax on the future. Cheap money and poor tax policy is driving the market boom, not productivity. Luckily for him, when country pays dearly for bankrolling this no/low cost money policy, he will be just a memory.

President Bone Spurs fancies himself a brilliant general, but fails to understand anything that a common soldier knows from tactics to principles and honor:
  1. Talk down the man or his ideas, but never disparage his service (fails at this almost daily);
  2. Honor sacrifice;
  3. Always show allegiance to an ally, never leave them in the field of battle;
  4. Providing aid and comfort to the enemy is an offense against all who serve and our entire country;
  5. Warriors take pride in having ethics and honor- a soldier that violates either should be disciplined not pardoned;
  6. Integrity and honesty matter- the higher the rank, the more it matters.
Our 'brilliant general' doesn't appear to know how to build/maintain alliances or fight a war in the adult world. He IS adept at fighting a war of words on twitter against milk toast politicians and conning those wanting a savior.

It’s too late on a Friday to respond to most of that, but I will just say that I’m not a fan of the “man.” Also don’t agree with everything he’s done. I did however make out very nicely from tax reform :). He’s also doing far better than the alternative would have.

What about when we had record jobs and stock markets under Obama?

Those were nice too and I certainly benefited from that as well. Though most scholars would agree it was a somewhat sluggish recovery.

However, there is no denying that the trajectory from Trump’s election night to today is vastly superior to the trajectory from Obama’s to the day America voted red.

Glad to see the upward trajectory continuing.

According to Steyer, Trump failed as a businessman. Plenty try and fail, try and fail, then hit it LARGE. Fact.

I've no love for Trump, but can we stay in the realm of reality?

His most appealing quality for me is the fact that he has the left so completely rustled.

Well, that and my holdings...

Third base.

My investments have been on the same trajectory for 10 years. I appreciate that they haven’t tanked- yet.

Yea, race relations really improved under Obama.

Just trying to appreciate living in the best country and the best time in the history of the world. Breathe in the success! Not sure why so many are struggling to appreciate what we have.

Hows the gap between the haves and have nots?

I‘m assuming it’s as good as its ever been. Pretty sure today’s “poor” have government subsidized food and shelter and I bet most have cell phones, internet and flat screen TVs.

Can you imagine historical descriptions of the “poor” who were able to tweet about their plight?

Truth Bombs up in here y'all. Supported by the trends, no denying it. Socialism does NOT work. The data points that are measured are eye opening. My favorite part is the actual metric of Govt Jobs. And those that have them. Ask yourself how many of your friends that actually WORK in govt come home, drink a cold one and talk about productivity, ROI cost savings and profit yields. I have none. Read this again after getting rustled and report back to me. I'm not talking FBI types, it's the Upper Florida Rare Mollusk Monitoring Department with an annual budget of 10 Mil. Or the Fully Funded Cal Berkley Grant of Research on The Mating Habits of Pet Ferrets Under Duress.

Maybe the news this week that Trump is cutting down on free food for able bodied people without dependents will help boost the labor participation rate?

meh. Again, 40% of. Americans can’t handle a $400 unexpected expense without going into debt. I know you would like to think that all of those people “made bad choices”. But many of them work and work hard, long hours. It’s just that they are not compensated enough to match the cost of living.

There is still some merit on social programs to help the poor.

Is there any doubt, Trump will roll in 2020?
5 more years will destroy the brain dead left.
Plus that Supreme Court will be stacked with studs.

Geez man, can't you just do what @scotchtiger said and appreciate what the top earners have?

I agree there is merit. Did you read the proposed change? It’s simply enforcing existing federal policy of capping assistance in counties with low unemployment. And again, only for able bodied adults without dependents.

Lol. Those people who can’t afford a $400 expense generally still have cell phones, internet and flat screen TVs.

It’s the greatest quality of life in the history of the world. And that’s not limited to the folks at the top.

No, because unlike @scotchtiger and trump, i tend to look at long-term vs short-term. Trump is running our country like he ran most of his businesses... into the ground. He continues to push for federal spending increases, tax cuts and deregulation. That is a recipe for future disaster, as we have seen in recent history. While we will certainly realize short-term gains - and scotch can start a new thread each month sucking off Trump - in the long term we are heading for disaster. Any true conservative, who is not swept up in their fan boy love for Trump - sees this.

This criticism below is from a conservative group Freedomworks regarding the recent budget busting bill that Trump forced republicans to support.

The legislation has been sharply criticized by outside conservative groups, who oppose its impact on deficits. Before the vote Thursday, FreedomWorks Vice President of Legislative Affairs Jason Pye called the agreement “ludicrous.”

“There’s no question — Republican leadership shamelessly supporting a budget-busting deal and using the false fear of military atrophy as their cover is dishonest to Americans and disrespectful to our armed forces,” Pye said in a statement.

I can celebrate short terms successes and still be concerned about long term impact. I certainly agree that our spending is a problem. I would much prefer to see us reel it in significantly. But everyone is afraid to touch entitlements, which are the biggest expenses by far.

I don’t exactly see folks from the other side of the aisle trying to curb spending, so Trump is the best we have for now. Certainly don’t want to see us add MFA or some other major government expense that will compound the problem.

LOL. Trump is doing nothing to curb spending. nothing. the $5B that will be saved on his cuts to welfare will be spent on something else - like his wall that is a total waste of time.

What is Warren’s plan to cut spending? Or even Biden’s?

Not suggesting Trump is good on spending at all. The left option is just worse. We will add more entitlements, which is the mostly costly item in the budget.
