The dad of a friend of mine died this same way. He was cleaning up his yard after Hurricane Sandy in NJ and climbed down into the hole to cut the roots of an old blown over oak tree. The tree sprang back up and crushed him.
Never get into the hole of an uprooted tree with the tree still there. I’ve seen it happen where the tree pops backup, especially if you cut the trunk.
