OT - SC Police doing SC police things

Leon Lott doesn't have anything resembling a testicle. Glad he was called out. Besides this is unforgivable:

"Statements show more than $10,600 was charged at a single Golden Corral in Columbia during that time. [Leon Lott] typically went there two to three times a month. "

Surprised he hasn't died from Typhoid or something.

But seriously - was that some sort of group lunch (what some places call a "lunch and learn")? Was it a catered lunch for his deputies? How hard is it to rack up $11K at a GC? My best guess is pretty damn hard.

The Orangeburg County issue was Sheriff Larry Williams (haha). That is not news - was in the news when it happened. Odd thing is he was a pretty decent sheriff - everyone thought.

The Greenville County Sheriff issue has been all over the news.

These are sherrifs, who were all elected. Says more about the voting demographic than police.

I always kind of wondered about that. It tends to make the Sheriffs into politicians.

As to the article itself - some of that stuff is really eye-raising and some looks like we could have a reporter who has no idea how any sort of large organization is run. Before making too harsh of a judgement I'd like background on some of the larger expenses like the uniform shop - did he use his card to buy uniforms for several deputies for some reason (damaged uniforms during an arrest)? Assuming the reason was legitimate then at best you have a paperwork/procedure issue. It would depend on the particular procedures of that department.

$72K motor home from embezzling funds? Yeah - that's a problem. Using prisoners for personal tasks? Problem. Sexual harassment/rape/etc - BIG problem. Sheriff getting away with a DUI. Problem.

Big Christmas party for the department? Not too worried about that as long as it is above board. Deputy of the year getting an M4? I'm a little jelly, but not too concerned.

There was some bad stuff in there - make no mistake.

Shameful and disgusting revelations in there.

And good on the P&C for unearthing them.

This is what the press is supposed to do and why there are first amendment protections. To make sure the people get the FACTS about their elected leaders without fear of retribution from the government.

I'm afraid some news outlets have gotten away from that and have lost the public trust.

I may have issues (more questions really) about some details in the story but this is what the press is supposed to do.

It’s funny how a state that blindly sides with police have these issues. At least we can all agree kneeling is the problem.

Your comments are prejudiced, vague, and inflammatory for no good reason. People abuse power-thats not a newsflash for anyone. It has nothing to do with the entire state as a whole, other than it happened here and it has absolutley nothing to do with the people of SC other than they elected folks who were thought to be good law enforcement officers and they turned out to be less than upstanding in some cases. Some of the things mentioned in the article are arguably not a big deal and some are extremely alarming. Great job by the author(s) for bringing things to light. There is a ton of good that is done by law enforcement officers every day in this state as it should be. Unfortunately, not much of that gets mentioned.

This article, while its certainly needed, shouldnt be intended to lump all SC sherrifs together.

Yeah. Liberals are calling out the police for stealing people’s propety and now stealing tax dollars. Shouldn’t be an issue for the big government loving republicans. Tread on me lol.
Great. Look forward to the ad nauseam "news" coverage where they take this isolated incidents and try to brainwash the American public into believing corrupt police departments are a nationwide epidemic. Like they are currently doing with the "white supremacist" thing.

South Carolina had corrupt police policy of stealing procession that was determined unconstitutional. These same police departments are being led by corrupt sherifs...

You’re okay with sheriffs stealing and you’re okay with police departments illegally taking your property. You also seem offended because this weekend wasn’t friendly for white nationalist.

People would stop calling you fascist if you valued freedoms and were against racism.

#NotAllCops!

Seriously, I think there is something wrong with the system and the way that we deify cops in this state cannot help. I know they have a tough job and most of them do it honorably but there are too many examples of police doing the wrong things. And the good cops still stand by and let it happen.

Nobody is saying all cops are bad.

I’m saying police departments are nothing more than a tax service for the government. This is also why income an sentencing correlate. Police departments are influenced by money. They will continue to be like this when half the population are for corruption and the illegal seizure of property by police.

I apologize for the confusion. My "#NotAllCops!" was making fun of the people who rushed in to defend the honor of cops in general.

Elected officials have been doing this for centuries. It's not unique to SC or the police either...hate to break it to you.

I'm sorry....have we met? You sure seem to know alot about me after reading a post or two. For the record, I didn't even read the article. Perhaps I'm a bit jaded when every news outlet in the country uses isolated incidents to assure me there are epidemics out there that are the sole responsibility of Trump, his supporters and conservatives in general. Maybe I jumped the gun assuming this was another one. If not, my bad.

It's the liberal way...have a dissenting opinion and you are automatically a racist and a Trump supporter. I guess once we are getting our drinking water from waste pipes like the Venezuelans, someone other than Trump may take some heat for screwing up America.

Trump is a big government loving socialist...

How would you describe a president that doesn’t understand free markets? Trump thinks GM should keep a plant open or sell it..... missed where the government trying to influence the private sector wasn’t socialist. Also missed where tariffs were capitalist.

If it makes you feel better I think liberals are idiots for hating big gov trump.

Agreed. I’m against all of it. You’re fine with it when it’s the police. Just like Hillary should be in jail but Trump shouldn’t. I see a criminal for a criminal.

They have a tough job and don't get paid all that well for it.

Your last sentence is an almost unavoidable consequence of being in a job where you may get shot at - the guy you rat out for doing whatever could very well be the one who is supposed to save your ass. I honestly don't know how you fix that in the real world.

That doesn't make corruption right, mind you. It also doesn't help when cops who didn't do anything wrong get lumped in with the bad ones. It can create an "us vs them" mindset - with the citizens being "them". IF it gets bad enough that is.

I think the fix is a two way street. But that means you need the general public to do their part. And people, by and large, are panicky, impulsive, and stupid.

IMO that's different that most of what the article was discussing. The article was more about systemic abuses of power by elected leaders (Sheriffs).

I been saying this the entire time. Trump is NOT a big government loving socialist, nor is he a free capitalist. Trump is a big Trump loving Trumpian. As long as his personal interests align with MAGA, this country is in good shape (that's right, I actually said that), b/c Trump will absolutely do and say ANYTHING to further his own agenda. Good or Bad, Truth or Lie... those things don't enter into Trump's calculations at all. Trump is all about Trump. Always has been, always will be. Period.

The other side of that coin (and why I despise Trump). Is that the MOMENT his personal interests and MAGA diverge, I have absolutely no doubt that Trump will sell out his country and every one of us without batting an eye if the price is right. It's just who he is.

This does explain why he’s so for revaluation and against revaluation. Why he’s for a free market and for tariffs.

It is funny watching party line voters switching their views based on trump. If trump is anti war, liberals are pro war and republicans are anti. If trump is anti free trade Dems are pro free trade lol.

It should also be noted that this article is dealing with Sheriffs and deputies, not police. "Police" is a general term but is usually used for city law enforcement. Sheriffs generally deal with counties and unincorporated areas.
Yeah. It’s not unreasonable to question if cops would be corrupt under a system that is being lead by corruption.

I’m not anti police, I’m anti police state. Cops should be held to the same legal standards as everyone else. Shooting someone in the back is murder, give them life like all the other murderers. I’m also okay increasing jail time for people who kill or try to kill cops.

Why, exactly? The penalties for murder are already pretty stiff and I take some exception to the legal system effectively stating that the life of a police officer is worth more than mine or anyone else's.
