OT - VPN and TV

Does anyone know how or had any luck using a VPN to watch NFL games outside your area? My son is trying to watch the 49ers game today, but I don't want to pay $350 for the full NFL package just to watch 1 team. I doubt it's possible, but thought I would ask the experts
