Overall deaths in 2020

First off, that 2.5M is just dead wrong. The provisional number is 2.7M and doesn't include January or likely any of December. It also is not anywhere near finalized.

Second, it ignores the fact that ~300,000 of those are from the virus.

Third, there is a CDC reporting lag. That 2.5M number "as of Nov." is just what the CDC has reported so far. They haven't even finalized the 2019 numbers.

Also, I knew you were a Trump supporter, but I didn't realize you consider Covid a scam. Bless your heart.

You did not refute the post at all. If we are having this terrible pandemic, then total deaths should be noticeably up by the end of this year. That's not going to happen though and we all know it. How many thousands of non covid deaths are being counted as covid deaths? Why are we having practically no flu this year? Go ahead and prove me wrong.

Easy. There is less flu this year due to the COVID protocols and a huge influx of people getting their flu shots earlier than before. There's also a theory called viral interference, which postulates that COVID primes the immune system against other viruses so you can't be co-infected. There are many articles out there to explain but you won't hear about it from Q or random right wing Twitter trolls.

I'm starting to think we need to round up people like you and put you through re-education camps before you totally destroy this country.

I don't even know why I bother, but as usual, OP is posting bullshit. He doesn't even try to find even REMOTELY reputable sources, just randomly posts from twitter and/or random crap sites. I will admit that he is remarkably consistent in posting inaccurate data. Here's an article debunking it from Reuters:

Key point:

In mid-October, the CDC released analysis of death figures between Jan. 26 and Oct. 3, and revealed there had been an estimated 299,028 excess deaths in 2020 by this time ( here , datawrapper.dwcdn.net/LWq2f/6/ ). It said of this figure that 198,081 deaths (66%) were believed to be due to COVID-19 – although the department also noted that underestimations could have been made on the total impact of the pandemic. A similar study from the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) looking at data between March and July also found US deaths had increased 20% during this period. COVID-19 was attributed to 67% of this excess (here).

Here's the fact check:

I like it, but nope. Not even close. The fact is that the OP posted information that is just plain wrong. There is a 20% increase of deaths this year over the "normal" of the last 5 years. And guess what? The people doing the counting THIS YEAR are the same people that did the counting for the previous years (and OP is relying on their previous data to make his claims). BUT OP will tell you with a straight face that they were telling you the truth THEN but are lying NOW to GET Donald Trump.

RIGHT... You site twitter and I site the actual numbers from the actual people doing the counting. It's not BS. Why don't you try looking it up? Show us numbers to back your claim. Show us ANYTHING remotely reputable besides some drivel from right wing sites and twitter.

Agreed but I was only addressing the question regarding why we don't see as much of the flu this year, like in previous years. I believe his implication is that flu deaths are being incorrectly reported as COVID deaths.

Well, he believes what Donald Trump tells him he believes. No amount evidence is going to convince him (although I keep trying). Anyone who disagrees with Trump the Great is lying.

I did refute it. I refuted it by saying the post is wrong.

The 2020 data is incomplete.

Getting facts from random sources on Twitter is a good way to misinform yourself. I recommend against this practice, else you find yourself walking around with a head full of incorrect information and a skewed perspective of the world. AKA - you are no longer living in reality. Sadly, quite a few Americans exist in this state these days.

Critical thinking ain't what used to be.

As an example, instead of trusting the numbers retweeted by an obvious highly partisan individual who claims to be an objective reporter - and all in the name of confirming your own inherent biases; instead, try questioning those numbers and see what that tells you.

In this case, I went directly to the CDC website for weekly death counts by all causes(https://data.cdc.gov/NCHS/Weekly-Counts-of-Deaths-by-State-and-Select-Causes/muzy-jte6), downloaded the data to CSV and totaled all deaths through the last available date(12/5).

That total is 2,999,326.

Given the median value from the last 8 weeks is ~58k, and there will be roughly 4 weeks remaining to add here in 2020. We can project an additional ~232k deaths for an initial tally for the year of 3,237,326.

This would be pretty much be spot on with an additional 350,000 deaths due to Covid this year. But, even so, there are so many variables in deaths for a year, it is quite simple minded to look at it as a black and white calculation and expect a simple net add of Covid deaths plus regular average deaths from other causes. This year has been such an extreme departure from the norm, you have to expect that to affect a variety of other causes of death beyond the direct deaths attributed to Covid itself. ie; higher suicide rates, but lower rates of other infectious diseases due to social distancing measures, etc...

This tells me not to trust Mr. Jon Miller and that he is operating with an agenda, or is simply not a person capable of his own critical thinking skills. Either way, not a person from whom I would trust any information whatsoever.

Step out of the echo chamber and things become so much clearer.

Using your brain feels good, try it some time.

So I assume that you now see that Covid has had an impact and the earlier information you shared was slanted and inaccurate.

You mean reading hyper partisan agenda driven 'reporting' on twitter isn't doing your own research? But thats what they taught me at Clemson University, how to do research. Step 1 open twitter, step 2 search for stop the steal, step 3 drool.

I had no problem finding the data set on the link he provided. here is the csv link: https://data.cdc.gov/api/views/muzy-jte6/rows.csv?accessType=DOWNLOAD

Lets go ahead and get some year end totals that are official and then it can be genuinely discussed. A nominal increase though is by no means directly attributable to covid. How many people died this year due to lockdown related issues, died from not getting medical required due to the covid lockdown? I would say right offhand that anything close to the last few years is a knock against the covid pandemic scam especially with the doctored numbers...pardon the pun.

The link provided is correct. You need to download the CSV file and do the legwork yourself. Don't take it from me, I pointed you directly to the data, do your own due diligence.

Ah, ok. Firstly, you don't like the conclusion I arrived at, so deflect. Classic technique there. Secondly, I made the exact same point as you in my post regarding the complexity of drawing any conclusions whatsoever using simple black and white math(ie;A + B = C) for such a nuanced topic.

The simple point is. Your original post is incorrect, misleading, and is misinformation. You can stick your head in the sand if you want, but it doesn't make you right.

Just watched a clip of doctor scarf admitting in a national press conference today that people who died of something else but had the virus were counted as COVID deaths. It doesn’t get any plainer than that. This thing has an actual mortality rate comparable to the common cold.
when the median age of death is over eighty with avg of 2.6 comorbidity factors it should say something to anyone with a brain. These people were dead in months already and many had DNR orders in place. This was never even remotely close to a national emergency. This was the excuse for the suspension of constitutional rights and was totally unlawful.
It’s over, they’ve won. Anything else after this is just a skirmish in a lost war against tyranny.
It could even be true that they knew if they could slow the spread enough until the weather cooled and people moved indoors it would spread like wildfire and keep as many as possible from revolting against this insane lockdown. It’s already as clear as day these measures haven’t worked, but they insist on continuing to lie and hide the truth. If you don’t understand why they’re doing this you need help.

Boo...this isn't even posting some crackpot who has a nurse wife or other nonsense.

A bad flu season is 60k deaths. Most of those skew towards older people too. We are over 300k and not done with a full year.

60% of the American population has comorbidity beforehand (we are not a healthy population thanks to one of the worst health care systems that just cares about profit but not actual health but that is another conversation). So no--people aren't dead already.

Is it tyranny to wear a mask in public? It is a hassle but tyranny? Why not think of it as an act of christlike love for you neighbor? If folks took it more seriously, like other countries--invested money in small businesses and keeping workers home instead of pissing it away to Trump family business/family friends/the Joel Ossoff's of the world with crap PPP then we would have a better handle and wouldn't be in this situation.

My 40 yr old friend was on oxygen and in the ER, almost lost him. His 20 year old son has major scarring of the lungs and still in the hospital.

Grateful for improved steroids (remember all that hydroxy nonsense??) and frontline workers. Grateful for this Moderna vaccine coming.

Just re-upping that the entire premise of this thread was, of course, based on false numbers. Total deaths at UP significantly in the US this year.

But hey, who wants to let facts get in the way of an ideological effort to whitewash the death of 300,000 Americans, and counting?

I can't imagine why deaths would be so high when you have these 'very fine' Freedom Patriots looking out for us

Wow...who would of known. Another sign of the covid scam perpetrated on America.

Wow, who would have known? Another BS post from OP. Not only BS in this case, about as wrong as you can get.

And of course the obligatory siting of the sources. It should be noted here that I actually DID NOT go to the CDC and other sites to verify. So in spite of the high level of reporting, it's still a tertiary source.

LEAST BIASED
These sources have minimal bias and use very few loaded words (wording that attempts to influence an audience by using appeal to emotion or stereotypes). The reporting is factual and usually sourced. These are the most credible media sources.

  • Overall, we rate the Associated Press borderline Left-Center Biased due to left-leaning editorializing, but Least Biased on a whole due to balanced story selection. We also rate them Very-High for factual reporting due to proper sourcing and a clean fact check record.
