My 14 year old daughter was attending a JROTC leadership camp in NC. The first activity for everyone is a swim test where they jump in the lake from one dock and swim to the other dock. One of the high schoolers in the group just before hers did not make it to the other dock, wasn’t found for at least 20 minutes and passed away. I can’t imagine what those parents are feeling and what they are going through. Selfishly, I am concerned for my princess as she saw the events unfold from the initial confusion to the search and recovery process. They cancelled the remainder of the camp and she is home now, it is just a lot for a child her age to process.
To make matters worse, she was quite anxious about the swim test the morning she was leaving for camp. In an attempt to get her to relax and remain confident, I told her “look, nobody has died doing the swim test. They have lifeguards everywhere. Just relax and do your best, you’ll be fine.” I really wish I could have that one back.
Please say a prayer for all involved. Just a terrible situation.
