You want to be proud of your heritage? Then own it. The germans took down their nazi flags. They don't celebrate that part of their history. You want to be proud of your southern heritage? Then OWN IT. Define the good parts of it and celebrate it. If you have a confederate Tennessee battle flag that you conflate with what your great grand daddy fought under... well I don't know what to tell ya. There were different flags besides the stars and bars and your ancestors probably didnt' fight under it. They hung that TN flag over the SC capitol during jim crow to make a point. That point was FU to black people.
My family is from black mountain and we fought in the civil war. We didnt' fight under a stars and bars. Figure it out.
