'Rich Men North of Richmond' Singer to GOP - Stop Using Me For Politics

It was stupid to put this song in the debate. But of course at the same time do liberals like the song now?
It doesn't change a thing about how I feel about the song, which didn't appeal to me then and doesn't appeal to me now. But it's hilarious that the right thought they had found their anti-Biden hero only for it to backfire in their face.

Unlike you, I never thought the song was about biden. I assumed it was about rich men in washington which includes both sides.

It came off as whiney to me. Bitching about hours and wages? Be thankful for having a job.

If a black guy had rapped a similar ballad it certainly would not have been featured in the GOP debates and championed on this message board.

I don’t particularly care for the song but I do think “rich men north of Richmond” is a clever turn of phrase.

Too many people crying about victimhood are moaning about being victims themselves. Quit bitching. Don't like your low-paying job? Then learn a skill that will get you a higher paying one. America hasn't left blue collar or lower-income white men behind. The reason they are falling behind in today's economy is too many aren't willing to pay the price to achieve.

Don't blame me (I won't say I am rich but I have a white-collar job and live north of Richmond) for your troubles. I came from a lower-class socioeconomic family. My parents didn't have college educations but insisted their 5 kids would. I took out student loans and earned scholarships to college.

Did you know the avg income in 1930 adjusted for todays inflation is 85k? What is the average salary today you may ask, its 53k. Just some food for thought when you start spouting this nonsense about America not leaving the middle class behind.

There are far more opportunities for people today than ever. Unemployment is at near-record lows. College is more accessible than ever before, even if that means community college.

We are now at a point where the minimum wage is a nonfactor because employers are paying higher wages than the minimum. (That is not to say we should abandon a minimum wage because it won’t always be a labor-favored market like today.)

I don’t think we need to be blaming “Rich men north of Richmond” for the economic situation of white men south of Richmond.

So what accounts for the erosion of middle class wealth then? Why is it occurring? Could it maybe have something to do with... OH I don't know, stockbuy backs and paying executive 366 times the average workers salary? Even with a labor-favored market we were made to balance the inflation on the backs of the middle class, lowering their buying power. People pretend their are only one way to do things.

Who’s pro-Biden, at this point? Just out of curiosity.

Good lord. We’re blaming stock buybacks?

What would you blame? Stock buybacks used to be illegal. Theres a strange correlation of its legalization and the shrinking of the middle class.

in 1982, the Securities and Exchange Commission passed rule 10b-18, which created a legal process for buybacks and opened the floodgates for companies to start repurchasing their stock en masse.

Im sure you can guess how its gone since 2015 ...

RCP Average8/1 - 8/28--42.153.4-11.3

139,440,000 Americans, which should include construction workers, the chip industry, seniors that have reduced drug costs, the green industry and pro-choice advocates among others. And if you include non-Americans, the whole of Europe sans Hungary.

To parse it a bit, you can be pro-Biden policies and not want him to run again, like me. if you consider that pro-Biden, so be it.

That’s not even remotely accurate. The average income in 1930 was around $1,370. In today’s money, that’s roughly $25,000 using inflation data through July. The average income was nearly halved over the next couple of years after 1930, also. The average income for full time equivalent Americans today is over $75,000. The median salary is close to $53K.

Myriad factors with stock buybacks not among them.

After looking it up further you are correct. Got bad numbers

I think the average salary today is higher than 53k but regardless I see your point. It does feel like the middle class is being left behind. Yea it sucks that Americans can’t graduate high school, go straight to pushing buttons in a factory, and make enough money to comfortably start and support a family. But think about the quality of life for a middle class American today compared to 1930, or compared to every other country.

I am pro-Biden. And I don't think there is another Dem candidate that would win the general election so I am glad Biden is running for re-election. Republicanism, defined by Trump and his cohort (and there is no other kind of Republican who stands a chance of being elected), must be defeated once and for all. A return to traditional Republican policies such as free trade, individual choice, an absence of government interference on personal and business lives, etc. can't happen fast enough.

Yeah, I grew up in a family that had one working parent (my dad) and a stay at home mom with 5 kids. While I don't recall feeling like I was missing out, I also lived in a rental home, rarely went on vacations, watched black and white TV until I was a teenager, had to borrow money to go to a public university ... I think today's middle class has it much better.

I still think ambition is important to getting ahead. I don't know why women so outnumber men in colleges these days but it isn't because boys are being 'left behind' by elementary and high schools. Admittedly, I probably live in a socioeconomic bubble living North of Richmond, but that's not because of government handouts here - or stock buybacks!

According to this, $75K would place the US only behind Luxembourg and Iceland among European countries for average wages. Notably, we’re 40-50% higher than so-called peer countries. And we have lower taxes, therefore higher take home pay.

Seems the complainers should focus elsewhere for their troubles. Life in the US is pretty freakin awesome.
